Job Description

The Curriculum Designer works under the supervision of the Manager of Learning Design to promote best practices in andragogy, active learning and instructional design methodologies in the design of online and on-campus courses. This role collaborates with internal partners and subject matter consultants. Main responsibility is to produce curriculum design documents using established templates and best practices through a systems perspective.

Required Experience / Education

  • Master’s degree - instructional design, curriculum and instruction; Bachelor’s degree with equivalent years of experience minimum, plus samples)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in higher education:
  • Collaborating in an educational curriculum development environment
  • Researching subject matter resources
  • Collaborating to design learning engagement that reflects adult learning principles
  • Experience in an elearning or curriculum design and development environment
  • Demonstrated understanding of adult learning theory, application of Bloom’s Taxonomy and Kolb’s experiential learning model

 

Desired Experience / Education

  • Doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction, education, or organizational development
  • Experience with academic institutions, adult learners and higher education faculty, a plus
  • Experience (or familiarity) working with textbook publishers and open educational resources
  • Experience in storyboarding for elearning or interactive or narrative instructional/training media
  • Experience using a learning management system for course edits, updates, quality checking
  • Familiarity with copyright, fair use and creative commons licensing desired

Primary Duties

  • Supports instructional design of courses for online and on-campus modalities
  • Develops and aligns learning objectives, methods of assessment and learning activities with established course learning outcomes based on input from subject matter experts and internal academic partners
  • Liaises with academic leadership, curriculum team and manager for input, feedback and approvals at specific process milestones during the design and development process
  • Collaborates with elearning team members to meet deadlines for course development and deployment
  • Contributes to workflow, process and procedures for implementing instructional design plans
  • Quality checks course design documents for adherence to best practices through systemic perspective
  • Applies systems perspective in learning design approach based on academic levels
  • Incorporates faith orientation to curriculum
  • Writes instructional media scripts and copy for curriculum details as required
  • checks course design guides for accuracy, adherence to best practices and to provide feedback
  • produces design documents (course vision)
  • plans learning media resources
  • adheres to best practices for UC's instructional design
  • Researches subject matter sources for use in learning activities or learning media
  • Works with publishers and distributors of instructional/learning resources, etextbook options, digital course pack solutions and learning media for use in online courses
  • Researches and identifies open educational resources within online courses, where applicable
  • Liaises with university copyright expert to investigate copyright clearance
  • Secures copyright clearance of instructional content within courses
  • Checks for quality and compares new/updated course shells against approved course development guides
  • Analyzes course and learning data to inform continuous improvement of instructional design efforts
  • Additional duties assigned by Director of Learning Design & Engagement

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written skills, including copy editing, copy writing for learning and storyboarding
  • Experience in an online learning (elearning), or training environment, preferred
  • Expertise with office applications: word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, charts and/or forms
  • Familiarity with copyright, fair use and creative commons licensing, as well as processes and practices for clearing, documenting and reporting copyright
  • Experience in utilizing a learning management system (Moodle preferred) for course content uploads/ edits and/or course facilitation
  • Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to maintain high levels of creativity and quality
  • Ability to be flexible in work assignments that may require changing priorities regularly
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, production environment that requires flexibility and adaptability to change
  • Ability to stay on top of assigned work priorities checking in with eLearning leadership to clarify, confirm and strategize about priorities, workload and workflow
  • Experience with academic institutions, a plus
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet project deadlines, stay on track, and communicate workflow obstacles while working on assigned projects with efficiency and attention to detail
  • Self-starter with the ability to work in a team-based, fast-paced atmosphere with high standards for quality, accuracy, and innovation
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures in a complex university setting
