The Research Associate (RA) will be involved in collaborations focused on medical imaging and its application to cancer. This field represents an emerging frontier in cancer research, promising to bring unprecedented advances in diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic directions. In Miami, there is currently a specific hub involving the Sylvester Cancer Center, The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and the Center for Computational Science, all of them part of the University of Miami.

The RA regularly interacts with the Center’s research staff as well as other University researchers in an interdisciplinary environment. The RA will be part of a team of research including oncologists, experimentalists, computational and software development experts. The team will meet regularly and the RA will be reporting about the ongoing activities.

Job Duties (summary of the duties and responsibilities of the job listed in order of priority)

  • The RA will collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment, providing computational analyses while interacting with oncologists and software developers.
  • Experimental images referred to cancer patients will be the knowledge base for the application of known and novel methods by the RA.
  • The RA will provide data analysis services, supporting the development of software tools, running algorithms and employing either statistical or network approaches.
  • The experimental image data will later be integrated with clinical data for further specification of inference models.
  • The RA will primarily contribute to the results sections of papers destined to publication in high-quality journals.
  • The RA will perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Experience & Education:

A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Math or other related field. Minimum two years’ experience with data analysis and software tool development or related field.


The candidate should have knowledge in the field of medical imaging combined with a solid computational background in engineering, computer science, machine learning, statistics, math, or related field. Analytical skills using methods from any of the above-mentioned disciplines is required. Such skills will be necessary to deal with complex experimental data analyses, and will require implementing state-of-the-art methods and designing novel algorithms. The candidate should have high-level programming expertise in C, Python, R, Matlab, Java and Javascript. Hands-on experience using various image analysis and visualization tools like Cytoscape is required. Network expertise is a plus.

The candidate should have an ability and eagerness to keep up with changing technology and new applications. Strong team work ethics are desirable. The successful candidate will work with researchers at all levels with varied computer proficiencies, thus excellent interpersonal communication skills are required.
