Reporting directly to the Vice President for Budget and Planning, while maintaining an indirect reporting relationship to the Dean of RSMAS, the Executive Director of Finance will be responsible for handling all of the fiduciary, budgetary, and financial matters for the school. Specifically, the Executive Director will serve as the primary budget and financial Officer for RSMAS and oversee the financial operational matters of the school while maintaining prudent fiscal controls through adherence to University policies and procedures. This individual will be asked to perform a wide range of duties with potential University wide impact such as prepare and analyze financial data, oversee office operations, work with various levels of management throughout the University, and will be charged with the development and implementation of new and improved business processes. This position will be a professional who has exceptional analytical, communication and interpersonal skills, as well as strong organizational and management abilities. In addition, the Executive Director will possess the ability to present business information to faculty and senior administrators in a manner easily understood by non-financial professionals. Therefore, excellent communication skills-both written (narrative, tabular, graphical) and oral – are critical to the success of the incumbent. An attention to detail and insistence on the accuracy, timeliness, reliability, and usefulness of business information will be important characteristics.

Specifically, the Executive Director will:

  • Serve as primary budget officer for the school. This includes but is not limited to:
    • Oversee adherence to and execution of the school’s annual budget in accordance with University Budget Guidelines and Policies
    • Provide regular analysis of departmental budgets vs. actual and prepare quarterly variance reports for senior management
    • Prepare analyses of budget allocation, prepares and interprets income forecasts and any potential impact on operations, and review the current level of expenditures versus those planned to determine the year-end status of the budget.
    • Review and approve financial transactions and ensure compliance with and adherence to University policies
    • Review contractual obligations and ensure consistency with departmental budget goals and programmatic initiatives as well as consistency with University standards
  • Evaluate existing departmental financial and budgeting policies as well as transactional standards; consistent with this evaluation, assess whether existing policies and procedures are in keeping with the standards and processes of the University; as needed, establish new financial and transactional policies and procedures
  • Evaluate existing internal controls and approval processes; make recommendations on how to improve fiscal integrity and minimize conflicts.
  • Responsible for Unrelated Business Income as it relates to the school.
  • Provide broad financial leadership to RSMAS to support improvements, growth, and expansion. Assist the Dean in addressing key strategic issues related to the financial performance.
  • Lead the ongoing development and management of all aspects of RSMAS’ operating and financial infrastructure.
  • Develop a strategic financial plan for the school in keeping with the University’s overall strategic plan; provide recommendations to senior management on how best to execute the school’s plan effectively; keep senior management apprised of fluctuations from the plan.
  • Provide leadership for recommending financial measurements to be used to evaluate the various areas’ performance.
  • Produce insightful analyses of future trends, financial results, and forecasts for the Dean, Departmental Chairs, and Vice President of Budget and Planning analyzing the allocation of costs and revenue.
  • Responsible for equipment inventory and space management for the division in keeping with the division’s needs and goals.
  • Responsible for providing oversight and supervision of shipping and receiving for the RSMAS campus.
  • Responsible for the management, supervision, and overall professional growth and development of subordinate professionals and staff assigned as well as student and temporary employees as needed.
  • Perform, at the highest professional level, all other duties as may be assigned by the Vice President of Budget and Planning and the Dean.

Professional Experience/Qualifications

Experience: 10 years of relevant experience (minimum)

Education: Undergraduate and Graduate degrees required; CPA Professional Certification preferred.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of progressive financial operational management experience

Other requirements include:

  • Broad and deep repertoire of financial knowledge and skills and an excellent track record of achievement.
  • Needs to lead financial team in viewing their financial management activities as strategic components of the overall RSMAS business strategy.
  • Proactive, agile thinking, with the capability to create a solid financial plan that anchors the overall development strategy of RSMAS.
  • Ability to work in a complex environment with the skills to manage multiple projects and deadlines, establish priorities, set objectives, and achieve stated goals.
  • Strong financial planning and analytical skills and discipline.
  • Customer service experience and focus.
  • Proven manager who also has experience in the development and execution of a strategy.
  • Ability of appreciating and supporting the multiple missions of RSMAS (research, teaching, etc).
