Learning Specialist & Tutorial Services Coordinator

Smith College is accepting applications for a Learning Specialist & Tutorial Services Coordinator.  Reporting to the Director, the Learning Specialist creates programming related to academic support; provides academic support to students and to coordinate the peer tutoring program; acts as liaison between faculty and tutors; teaches learning strategies courses, conducts workshops and provides individual coaching sessions; and supports the Director in achieving center goals and priorities.  This is a full-time, academic year position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Interview, hire, train, supervise, and approve payroll for tutorial assistants and peer tutors.  Solicit recommendations from faculty and hire students through Job X.  Authorize student payroll through the Web Time Entry system.  Develop training materials and conduct tutor training.  Maintain CRLA certification for peer tutors. Participate in creating budget strategies for the Center’s tutorial services.  Monitor student payroll expenses.  Teach IDP136, Learning Strategies, a credit-bearing learning strategies course each semester.

Develop and maintain contacts with other support services and with faculty.  Offer college success skills support through workshops and individual appointments.    Disseminate information about Jacobson Center services through orientations, workshops, and campus news outlets. Create new programming and support the Director in achieving center goals and initiatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: MA/MS/MEd plus 1-3 years of tutorial services experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.  Familiarity with the literature on effective learning (best practices) at the college level, including that on learning challenges, differences, and disabilities. Teaching and supervisory experience preferred.

Skills: Excellent skills in communication, presentation, and group dynamics. Ability to learn and incorporate new technologies.  Ability to supervise and manage more than 50 students.  Flexibility of scheduling.  Empathy and sound judgment.  Sensitivity and understanding of the needs of a diverse student body.
