The Dougherty Family College is the newest college of the University of St. Thomas, opening in the fall of 2017 on the downtown Minneapolis campus. The Counselor/Life Skills Coach position is a support position within the Dougherty Family College. This position is responsible for assisting students with any mental health concerns, including but not limited to depression and anxiety, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic and classroom support, and consultation with professors, administrators, and student support staff. The incumbent will also provide individual and group counseling with our students based on students' needs. The position will also implement and be accountable for applicable federal laws, including FERPA, HIPPA and Title IX.

Essential Functions

  1. Counseling and Case Management: Provide counseling and case management services to students at the Dougherty Family College.
  • Provide individual and group counseling and crisis intervention services to students.
  • Maintain records and case notes in keeping with legal, ethical and professional standards of care.
  • Maintain an active caseload of students who may be at-risk and in need of social and other supportive services.
  • Develop plans of action to help students succeed.
  • Outreach and Referral: Provide outreach and referral services to impacted students, faculty and staff as appropriate.
    • Provide outreach and consultation services to the Dougherty Family College community including students, faculty and staff.
    • Develop and actively collaborate with a network of other community agencies and resources.
    • Refer people accurately and effectively based on identified and assessed needs.
    • Work with internal and external individuals, groups and organizations to develop programs or systems of care that support and enhance the health, social and emotional wellbeing and safety of students.
  • Other duties as assigned. May include, but is not limited to:
    • Providing lead worker assistance and direction to social work graduate students.
    • Assisting other faculty and staff with programming and activities as the College gets launched.
    • Be present at orientation in order to establish and build relationships with students, faculty and staff.
    This is a 0.92 FTE, 11-month position with reduced hours in June and July; full time in August.

    Minimum qualifications: LISW or LICSW. Deep and demonstrable knowledge of available community agencies and resources.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Work experience in a college setting.
    • Internship in college counseling or social work preferred.
    • Work experience and competency in individual and group counseling, case management, outreach and consultation.
    • Demonstrated interest and expertise in group and individual therapy.
    • Demonstrated competence working with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds (racial/ethnic, economic, religious, etc.), including a background in social justice or diversity education and work.
    • Knowledge and experience with student information systems, databases, etc.
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills. Comfortable presenting complex information to various audiences.
    • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a complex, demanding environment.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
    • Knowledge of applicable federal laws, including FERPA and Title IX.
    • Knowledge of the complete Microsoft Office suite of programs.
    Knowledge, skills and abilities required:

    • Theories of personality, development, and human behavior.
    • Ability to accurately assess a student's mental health.
    • Demonstrates specialized skills and training within a crisis intervention and prevention model, assessment of crisis situations, and utilization of appropriate intervention strategies for de-escalation and prevention of crisis situations.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of school and community resources available to assist students.
    • Consults and collaborates with other university personnel in gathering and giving information and establishing and planning for respective roles in the modification of a student's behavior and/or social/emotional being.
    • Knowledge of learning disabilities and classroom accommodations.
    • Case conceptualization skills, treatment planning and psychological intervention methods to assist clients in meeting mental health goals.
    • Multicultural competencies and ability to work effectively with clients from various ethnic, racial, gender, sexual orientation, religious and/or spiritual backgrounds, age or disability status.
    • Ability to react effectively to crisis situations and adapt with flexibility to changes in workload.
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to a wide variety of constituents, including parents, faculty, administrators, medical, psychological and psychiatric personnel.
    • Commitment to the Catholic mission of St. Thomas and sensitivity to unique spiritual and/or religious identities.
    • Ability to develop and manage computer database and provide statistical analysis.
