Job Description:

KEY JOB ELEMENTS:

•Oversee the operation, management and programming of the new $1.2 M Veteran’s facility ensuring quality experience for visitors to the center, appropriate student staffing and coordinating all office functions

•Serve as primary advisor the LSU chapter of the Student Veterans of America

•Work collaboratively with the LSU Foundation to meet with donors and foster donor relations.

•Recruit veteran and military students and dependents and serve as their admissions counselor. Assist prospective student veterans on the admissions process including providing campus tours.

•Be able to speak directly to students about educational benefits, rules, regulations and policies at the Veteran and Military Services Center

•Serve as primary liaison with external constituents as it relates to veterans and military services including but not limited to U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs and Louisiana Department of Veteran Affairs.

•Work collaboratively with the campus constituents in coordinating programs for students to provide critical resources and opportunities for student veterans.

•Meet one on one with veteran students, students who are family members of veterans and their families to inform them of services, provide referrals, and respond to issues and concerns.

•Coordinate various programming efforts including: orientation, social programs, faculty/student programs, off-campus transitions programs, etc.

•Manage Department of Veteran Affairs work study eligible students

•Participate in departmental assessment efforts to continually enhance services to meet veteran/military student needs

•Maintain website for veteran students containing a comprehensive list of student services available to veterans on campus both on the website and through educational and promotional materials

•Maintain liaison with Olinde Career Center to ensure veterans are receiving specialized advice on preparing resumes which reflect accurately their military experience and are informed of employment opportunities available through federal, state and local programs

•Cooperate with university colleagues on the evaluation of veteran student satisfaction with student services and address any issues that emerge

•Serve on university committees related to veteran and transfer students

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to the Director of First Year Experience

REQUIRED POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

•Bachelor’s degree

•Three to five years of related work experience

•Position requires some travel, weekend, and evening work

•Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

•Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team

•Basic computer skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other related programs

•Experience in program development, assessment, and presentations

ADDITIONAL DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•Prior military service preferred

•Master’s degree preferred  

•Ability to model appropriate behavior for student leaders and the campus community

•Well-organized and able to multi-task as needed and possess superior organizational skills

•Demonstrated knowledge of issues and concerns related to veterans and families of veterans including VA benefits.
