The University of Virginia's School of Engineering and Applied Science invites nominations and applications for the position of Department Chair and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Chair will be expected to assist in recruiting, developing, and supporting faculty while advancing the quality of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department through education and research programs. This position requires a strong commitment to research, teaching, department administration and outreach. The Chair, through effective leadership, is responsible for helping form university and school objectives and building consensus among the department's faculty and staff.
The ECE Department has grown from 24 to 34 tenured and tenure-track faculty members over the past 4 years (including 9 tenure-track Assistant Professors) and is well-positioned for additional faculty lines, given the School's and University's identification of Cyber-Physical Systems, Multifunctional Multiscale Integration, Neural Engineering, and Biomedical Data Science as areas for investment. Additional resources are also possible via a new and exciting University level Strategic Investment Fund of over $2 Billion dollars that is actively being used to improve excellence in teaching and research.
The Chair will promote effective leadership of personnel and management of departmental resources. Additionally, the Chair will:
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of department plans and policies
- Facilitate open communication with faculty and staff
- Foster excellence in teaching, scholarship and outreach for faculty, students, and staff in the department
- Assist higher administration in the assignment and evaluation of the services of each member of the department's faculty and staff
- Participate in the university and department assessment and accreditation processes
- Effectively represent all constituents of the department
- Serve as part of the school's leadership team.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering or a related field. Appointment with tenure requires documented excellence in research and teaching, and a national reputation. Preference will be given to candidates with vision and a long-term commitment to bringing the Department to new heights of international excellence, excellent communication skills, team building skills, leadership and management skills in an academic or industrial setting, skills in institutional advancement and a track record of securing funding, extensive experience in teamwork and effectively leading interdisciplinary groups and demonstrated commitment to diversity and respect for others.
