High School Diploma/GED. Breast-feeding experience. Bi-Lingual Spanish/English. Must have transportation to travel to sites daily to meet with participants.

Preferred Qualifications:

Familiar with the WIC Program.

Brief Description of Duties:

The WIC Breast-feeding Peer Counselor is a support person who gives basic breast-feeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breast-feeding moms. The incumbent should be enthusiastic about breast-feeding and want to help mothers enjoy a positive experience. The successful incumbent will be responsible for the following:

  • Must complete peer counselor training prior to functioning as a peer counselor and attend regular breast-feeding training.
  • Read assigned books and materials as assigned by supervisor.
  • Provide basic breast-feeding information and support to prenatal and new mothers by telephone and/or clinic visits.
  • Counseling topics will include breast-feeding benefits, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding.
  • Observe breast-feeding infants and mothers. Attend and assist with prenatal classes and breast-feeding support groups. Respect each participant and follow the Research Foundation HIPAA Laws.
  • Manage a caseload of WIC participants and make routine, periodic contacts with all clients assigned. Track and document all client interaction. File all peer counselor related paperwork.
  • Interact with WIC staff regarding breast-feeding concerns/issues/updates for WIC participants.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings. Assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling by conducting local outreach to doctors’ offices / hospitals etc. Meet with breastfeeding coordinator on a weekly basis.
  • Create breastfeeding promotional materials. May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.
  • Refer WIC participants to WIC Dietitians and the Breastfeeding Coordinator as needed. Make other referrals to community agencies and providers as needed.
  • Make hospital visits to Stony Brook WIC Participants at Stony Brook Medicine facilities as needed. Visit outside hospitals with prior approval as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
