Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, a TH Instructional Support Assistant in the Department of Laboratories is a valuable member of our team, who provides clinical services to our patient population. Will maintain specific knowledge of safe laboratory practices as endorsed by the New York State Department of Health and Occupational Safety and Health Administration and conducts oneself in a manner consistent with those practices to ensure the safety of all lab personnel.


Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.


Duties of a Instructional Support Assistant in Specimen Receiving/Phlebotomy:

  • Function as a shift team leader/coordinator directing personnel, monitoring and maintaining Phlebotomy Services and Specimen Receiving activities for weekends and holidays. Interacts in a professional manner with other shift supervisors or charge technologists.
  • Performs computer and laboratory registration processes, order entry, systems management, inventory functions,quality control and audits.
  • Assures compliance of all assigned staff with regulatory guidelines, University Hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Completes work sheets, daily logs and reconciliation of uncollected specimens prior to the end of the shift.
  • Reports any outstanding issues or problems to supervisory staff and attends staff meetings as required.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Re
  • One year of supervisory experience and customer service experience in a healthcare setting or a related field.
  • Current phlebotomy certification.
  • Four years of phlebotomy experience including a minimum of one-year pediatric phlebotomy experience.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Computer competency in Microsoft applications.
  • Knowledge of laboratory technology, laboratory information systems and/or hospital based computer systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of wireless hand-held blood collection devices.
  • Associate’s Degree preferred.

Special Notes:

All Hospital positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary. This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
