Posting Summary:
The Department of Cell Biology at the University of Virginia is seeking to fill a Laboratory Specialist 2 position. This position involves research in the areas of developmental biology and morphogenesis, and involves a variety of techniques in cell and molecular biology. Incumbent will perform routine cDNA cloning methods, cell and embryo culture, bacterial fusion protein production, gel electrophoresis, western blotting, and other biochemical techniques. A major responsibility of this position is the care and oversight of state-of-the-art aquaculture facilities that house our amphibian (frog) colonies. Other responsibilities include preparation of lab stock solutions, ordering supplies and maintaining inventory, maintenance of animal and reagent databases, and arranging service calls for departmental common equipment.

Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry or a related science and at least 4 years of laboratory experience, which may include student experience. A Masters degree in a related field may substitute for experience. Familiarity with standard molecular biology techniques such as PCR, mutagenesis and subcloning is preferred, but on the job training may be offered.

This position is restricted and contingent upon the continuation of funding.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of specific areas of research subject matter expertise. Ability to synthesize information, provide advice, and address needs independently. Knowledge of general lab procedures, basic safety precautions, and lab equipment.

4. Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to work with senior leaders to accomplish goals.
5. Ability to navigate University databases and systems. Ability to access and present information to University employees, faculty, and senior leaders.
6. Ability to grasp the University's educational mission, strategic aims, and programs.
7. Ability to work with animals.
