Have a way with the written word and an eye for wayward punctuation? Stanford University is on the hunt for an incredible Copywriter to join the Stanford Alumni Association's Marketing & Creative Services team. As a key member of the creative team, you'll work in a collaborative agency environment to create fresh, innovative digital and print communications that reach more than 220,000 Stanford alumni around the world and both graduate and undergraduate students on campus.

This is a full-time, onsite position reporting to the Creative Director and located on the beautiful Stanford campus.

  • Proven ability to write engaging, original copy for a wide range of marketing communications including email, web, direct mail, print ads and digital
  • Impeccable English-language editing and proofreading skills—only eagle eyes need apply!
  • Creative thinker with big ideas and excellent verbal communication skills
  • Team player able to communicate and collaborate well with colleagues and clients
  • Proven success working independently to manage and execute multiple writing and editing projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to write in SAA's “fresh” brand voice, creating pithy copy that connects with alumni audiences of all ages and life stages
  • Enviable organizational skills, keen attention to detail, and ability to prioritize projects and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Experience working from creative briefs and in an agency setting
  • Talented marketing video scriptwriter
  • Experience writing marketing, advertising and UX copy
  • Write, proofread, and self-edit copy for web, print, email and digital communications
  • Provide in-house copyediting services, expertly proofing all marketing collateral before print or digital live date (often 24hr turn-around or less)
  • Work both independently and collaboratively, communicating effectively with designers, clients, producers, creative partners, program marketing leads and managers
  • Attend client and team meetings, and interact productively during brainstorming and kick-off meetings
  • Work proactively with designers to ensure that copy communicates effectively within a layout (and vice-versa)
  • Ensure that copy is on-brand, on-message and proofed before seeking final approval from Creative Director
  • Consistently meet—or beat—deadlines as well as client expectations and SAA marketing writing standards (as determined by the Creative Director)
  • Act as guardian of SAA's communication standards and style guidelines
  • Work closely with the creative and digital teams to deliver work that is supportive of the overall SAA communication strategy, style, guidelines and brand
  • Take ownership of the quality—style, grammar and “fresh” voice—of the communication pieces s/he writes and oversees.
  • Work closely with marketing and program managers to understand communication and marketing goals and the motivations of the target audience

  • Minimum of 3-5 years writing experience in a professional environment preferred; marketing-related copywriting experience required
  • College degree required; preferable fields of study include English, journalism, and communications
  • Communicate ideas clearly and work well with colleagues and clients in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to work independently to meet both long and short-term deadlines while building and fostering collegial working relationships
  • Meticulous editing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to write communication pieces ensuring consistency with the SAA's “fresh” brand voice
  • Ability to manage complex tasks simultaneously, coordinate the work of numerous participants by setting priorities and deliverables.
  • Proficiency in both Mac and PC computing applications including email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Keynote and web navigation tools
  • Love of Stanford and a familiarity with the Stanford student experience and the Stanford alumni experience is a plus

    In support of SAA's values and mission and to engage and interact closer with our customers, the alumni of Stanford University, all SAA employees are expected to spend approximately sixteen (16) hours over the course of the academic year staffing events in addition to the responsibilities noted above. These events are typically held in the evening or on the weekend and include Commencement and Reunion Homecoming.
