Reports to: Senior Editor ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ POSITION SUMMARY: Stanford magazine, the award-winning magazine of the Stanford Alumni Association, is seeking a versatile, creative self-starter to serve in a dual role as staff writer and production assistant. The right candidate will help us enhance our digital publishing efforts through reporting, writing, photography and video production, while also managing important parts of the production process and some customer service tasks.

Our magazine has a 44-year history of strong reader engagement and high standards of editorial quality. Print versions of the magazine are published bimonthly for more than 200,000 readers around the world, and digital versions featuring additional stories appear on our website, Medium and social media/third-party sites, attracting more than 1.5 million readers each year. We want a team member who brings a lively intellect, a collaborative spirit and a desire to learn more about publishing in both print and digital formats.

The staff writer/production assistant touches virtually every aspect of our operation, working closely with editors, other writers, designers and production staff, as well as partners in the social media and marketing departments. The successful candidate will have strong communication and organizational skills, will be able to juggle multiple assignments, and will thrive in a workplace that values professionalism, initiative and a sense of humor. Familiarity with Stanford University is extremely helpful. This is a full-time position reporting to the senior editor.

CORE DUTIES:
Editorial Production (50%):
  • Pitch stories that run the gamut from briefs to features
  • Develop ideas for complements to written stories, and for standalone alternative-format stories (listicles, infographics)
  • Identify virality of online trending topics and translate into editorial opportunities
  • Report and write short to mid-length stories, primarily for our digital properties
  • Take photos and capture audio and video during reporting assignments
  • Help evaluate story ideas and manuscripts submitted by staff and others
  • Serve as a liaison to the social media team
  • Co-manage our Twitter feed
Production Support (25%):

  • Prepare materials for editorial/staff meetings and planning sessions
  • Respond to story pitch submissions
  • Compile pitch packets
  • Take notes at meetings
  • Manage digital collaboration tools
  • Manage story budgets

Customer Service/Administrative Assistance (25%):

  • Handle customer service requests, ranging from address changes to letters to the editor
  • Manage responses to SAA's the Loop newsletter
  • Assist with interdepartmental SAA/university inquiries

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 2-3 years of experience working in journalism, publishing or social media
  • Excellent organizational, communication and research skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Working knowledge of what content is shareable online
  • Understanding of metrics for channels like Medium, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter
  • Working knowledge of standard Mac-based office software (Word, Excel, Keynote, etc.)
  • Experience capturing photos, audio and video
  • Resourcefulness and curiosity
SAA CITIZENSHIP: In support of SAA's values and mission and to engage and interact closer with our customers, the alumni of Stanford University, full-time employees are expected to spend approximately sixteen (16) hours (without additional pay) over the course of the year staffing events outside of their regular job duties. Typically these events occur during the evening or weekend. They include such SAA-sponsored events as Commencement, Reunion Homecoming and STARS.
