Duties: We are seeking to hire a Research Specialist in the laboratory of Dr. Jay Gottfried at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. This position will involve performing mouse olfactory behavioral and neuroimaging research, to include (but not limited to) the following technical activities: animal (mouse) husbandry; mouse surgical procedures; preparation of research study materials and odor stimuli; mouse behavioral training and testing; assistance with mouse functional MRI (fMRI) data acquisition; mouse histological procedures; and microscopy. Administrative activities will include establishing and optimizing protocols, coordinating the conduct of multiple complex experiments, reviewing results, and revising protocols as necessary to ensure that project objectives are attained; maintaining detailed records of results; completing IACUC applications, revisions, and renewals; creating computer models, graphs, reports and summaries for use in publications, professional journals, and grant applications; creating and maintaining lab manuals regarding operating, safety, and other procedures; obtaining sales quotes for lab equipment and supplies; completing portions of grant applications and/or documents associated with current local, state, and federal regulatory guidelines; performing scientific literature searches in support of research; and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree, preferably in neuroscience, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or a related field, and 0 to 1 year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired required. Competencies in many of the following stated skills is preferred: mouse behavioral neuroscience (behavioral training, in vivo electrophysiology, optogenetics, pharmacology, etc.); mouse/general experimentation (husbandry, breeding, screening transgenic mice, dissections, blood collection, surgical procedures, etc.); molecular biology (DNA, RNA, PCR, cloning, etc.), cellular biology (cell culture, transfection, etc.), histology (tissue fixation/processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, etc.), and immunology (flow cytometry, ELISA, antibody production, etc.). Experience with small-animal MRI is useful but not necessary. We are looking for an individual with excellent analytical skills and organizational skills, with an attention to detail, and with an ability to facilitate open and effective communication, cooperation, and teamwork.
