Position Summary
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health care team to provide direct patient care services for patients on the Duke University Hospital Inpatient Pain Service in collaboration and with the supervision of the MDs in the Department of Anesthesiology. The APP augment's the physician's ability to provide pain services to the patients at Duke Hospital: collect and document clinical and research data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies, provide professional consultations and provide direct patient care services. The APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, and teaching.

Schedule
- Hours/Week: 40 scheduled work hours with a 30-minute additional meal break per work day
- Day shift schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (must be present for shift handoffs in the am and pm) for any daytime shifts worked.
- Nighttime shift schedule: Will cover onsite nighttime call shifts as part of a rotating schedule. This time will be included in the 40-hour work week.

Since this is a full-time professional level position, it is expected that this role may require working over 40 hours in a week and, on occasion, may require weeknight or weekend obligations. Any change in your work schedule must be approved by your direct supervisor and the Anesthesiology Chief Administrator in the Business Office.

Supervision
The APP will be assigned a supervising physician in the Department of Anesthesiology and will work in a team environment with all departmental physicians assigned to the Inpatient Pain Service.

Departmental Job Responsibilities and Standards
• Provide care to patients acting as an assistant to physicians following established standards and practices.
• Conduct thorough medical histories, performs physical examinations, initiates appropriate lab, radiology tests or other special tests required for evaluation of pain to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan with direct review by a physician.
• Must be able to work with autonomy and under direction of supervising physician.
• Perform clinical assessments on perioperative patients, including management of peripheral nerve and epidural catheters.
• Interrogation and management of intrathecal infusion devices.
• Provide information and answers routine questions of patients regarding pain management issues
• Educates patients regarding their pain, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects
and hazards.
• Perform appropriate record keeping, complete appropriate patient medical chart, transcribe lab data and routine correspondences.
• Consult with attending physician and members of the primary management team as appropriate.
• Ensure continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patient and other members of the
multidisciplinary care team or with other specialty areas as necessary.
• Demonstrate a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Demonstrate compassion and
professionalism and a commitment to excellent patient care.
• Supervise and review the work of advance practice nurses; train new personnel.
• Participate in teaching medical students and residents in techniques and procedures, which are unique to specific clinical setting.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
