About The Unit:

Unit Job Summary: Journeyman Locksmith: Installs, repairs and services mechanical, electrical and computerized locking devices. Performs work in accordance with University standards and procedures for University buildings and properties. Reads and works from blueprints, drawings, or other instructions. Plans assigned job, identifies materials and either installs or maintains related equipment. Repairs door locks, padlocks, safe locks and cabinet locks. Disassembles and reassembles locks to replace worn parts as needed. Maintains records of company locks and keys. Installs and maintains electronic and computerized locking systems. Duplicates keys. Inspects and trouble shoots building lock systems. Uses and maintains power tools. Helps introduce new employees to shop protocol, procedures and campus applications and equipment. Requisitions materials and supplies using in-house procedures as needed. Keeps working area safe and clean. Wears and/or uses appropriate safety equipment. Uses computers to enter and access job related information. Undertakes training related to job duties as deemed necessary by the University. Performs related job duties as may be assigned.

Unit Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of position-related education and experience required. Completion of job-related apprenticeship program preferred. Completion of advanced job-related training programs preferred. Completion of job-related associates degree (AA) preferred.

Unit Experience: Experience with MEDECO high security locks preferred.

Unit Job Function Competencies: Demonstrated ability to use computer programs and or learn basic computer operations related to position in a workplace setting required. Demonstrated ability to read and interpret documents required. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing required. Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical functions relevant to the position required. Demonstrated ability to problem-solve required. Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity and be physically capable of strenuous activity over extended periods of time required. Must be able to lift and move loads appropriate to job requirements and be able to bend and work in a kneeling position for periods of time required. Must be able to climb stairs and ladders, be capable of working at heights as required, be able to enter and work within tight spaces, and be able to withstand hot and cold temperatures required. Must be a bonded or a bondable locksmith required.
