Director of Data Education
The Director of Data Education will establish a program to:
- engage faculty and students in incorporating statistical and computational data analysis methods (data science) into the undergraduate curriculum and scholarship;
- provide guidance for students in finding data sets as well as teaching students how to clean and manipulate data for use in analytical and statistical applications;
- offer peer tutoring to students who need assistance with data and statistical applications.
The program will make a significant contribution toward meeting the increasing demand for data-intensive courses as well as promoting data and statistical literacy across the curriculum. We are interested in candidates from all areas of statistical sciences and analytics, in the broadest possible sense, to teach skills with broad, real-world applications.
- The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about developing educational offerings in a liberal arts environment and coordinating the library’s collaboration with faculty on data-oriented projects across a variety of disciplines, particularly in the social sciences.
- The candidate should expect to teach 3 to 7 credit hours per academic year. Teaching responsibilities may involve co-developing and co-teaching data-intensive courses with faculty from various departments.
- Provide education, advice, and consultation on data analysis software packages, statistical and quantitative research methods, data collection, data management, and visualization.
- Collaborate with colleagues among the library faculty in order to expand the concepts from our well-developed digital humanities program to the social sciences and other disciplines.
- Participate in the library’s assessment program.
The successful candidate will have:
- An ALA-accredited MLS (or equivalent) with a strong statistical background or a PhD or Master’s degree in a data-intensive discipline (e.g., statistics, sociology, economics, geography, public administration, urban planning, public policy, public health); a terminal degree is required for promotion;
- Academic or professional experience using quantitative methodologies;
- Experience teaching data-related skills and tools with application in various disciplines;
- Enthusiasm for teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment with small class sizes;
- Experience with a programming language used in data analysis such as Python or R;
- Experience with software for statistical and quantitative analysis (e.g., SPSS, SAS, Stata);
- Knowledge of public and proprietary sources of national and global data;
- Knowledge of geospatial data and technologies;
- Willingness to learn how textual and numeric data resources are used in disciplines across the liberal arts and sciences;
- Familiarity with fundamentals of data management, preservation, and reproducibility;
- Familiarity with data visualization tools;
- Comfort with or willingness to learn about APIs for data retrieval;
- Familiarity with textual information as structured data, e.g., XML;
- Strong desire to work in a team environment;
- Strong service orientation;
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to meet University and library promotion expectations; the position carries with it support for research time and funding for professional development.
