The College of New Jersey is currently seeking a full-time experienced Plumber and Steamfitter for its Facilities Plumbing Shop to perform varied types of work involving the preventive maintenance and inspection of all plumbing and steamfitting related systems and equipment, the replacement and lubrication of parts, and the cleaning and adjusting of components. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provides preventive maintenance to all Plumbing/Steamfitting related systems and equipment.Inspects said systems and equipment to determine what action is needed.Replaces parts as required; lubricates parts as needed; and, cleans and adjusts components as necessary.Reports all deficiencies to supervisor.

  • Installs, repairs and/or maintains water, drainage, waste and gas lines; toilets, wash basins, showers, bath tubs and urinals; appliances and machinery; and, installs, maintains and tests pumps.

Requirements:    

  • Responds to emergencies and other situations that may require the use/presence of staff knowledgeable about plumbing/steamfitting related systems and equipment both during and outside of normal working hours, including weekends, on-call coverage, and emergency response.

  • Knowledgeable of the methods and problems involved inspecting, repairing, installing, and maintaining water, drainage, waste and gas lines, radiators, toilets, wash basins, urinals, showers, bath tubs, and other rypes ofplumbing and steamfitting equipment and/or systems.

  • Ability to inspect, install, repair and/or maintain all types of plumbing and steamfitting equipment and/or systems, including fittings, fixtures, appliances and machinery under varying circumstances.

  • Ability to analyze plumbing and steamfitting work, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods to complete assigned work; ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions and assignments, and, ability to maintain simple records of materials used, work completed and time spent.

  • Ability to work with wrought iron, cast iron, butt welded, soil, asbestos, composition, and copper pipes.

  • Ability to efficiently and safely make plumbing and steamfitting repairs and to do associated plumbing and steamfitting work using standard plumbing tools and equipment, as well as other specialized tools and machinery, including, but not limited to pipe cutters, caps and dies, pipe threaders, soldering tools, varied types of wrenches, saws, gauges, and valves.

  • Ability to prioritize work in a high volume, fast-paced environment.

  • Will be required to respond to off-hours calls for service.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Three (3) years of broad industrial/commercial experience of work involving the installation, inspection, repair, servicing and maintenance of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, appliances, machinery and plumbing systems and related equipment.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license in good standing issued by the state of residence is required.

Preferred Experience:

  • Four (4) or more years of broad industrial/commercial experience of work involving the installation, inspection, repair, servicing and maintenance of plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, appliances, machinery and plumbing systems and related equipment preferred.

  • Comprehensive plumbing and steamfitting work experience within an institutional setting (e.g. higher education, school district, hospital).

  • Successful completion of a vocational training or apprenticeship program.

The College offers a generous benefits package that includes health, dental, vision and prescription plans as well as pension, paid leave time and tuition savings programs. This position is a New Jersey Civil Service position with the state title Plumber and Steamfitter. The starting salary for this position is $40,776.34, range 16 step 1. It is included for membership in the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) bargaining unit. Permanent appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful completion of a 4-month probationary period to assess the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Salary for an internal candidate will be determined in accordance with Civil Service rules.
