Associate Administrator, Cooperative Extension
Primary Purpose of Position:
The Associate Administrator provides leadership to county operations and state programs for the Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. This position provides visionary leadership for the development and maintenance of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, issue-based programming agenda that addresses the complexity of issues faced by North Carolina’s small, limited resource farmers and limited resource communities, youth and families and lead to the fulfillment of the organizational vision and mission.
This position is housed on the campus of N.C. A&T State University and reports to the Associate Dean/Extension Administrator. The Associate Administrator supervises two Program Leaders (ANR and 4-H/CRD/FCS), two Regional Program Coordinators (East and West), one Program Development and Evaluation Specialist, and an administrative support staff position. This positions works in cooperation with members of the Extension leadership team to ensure the collaborative nature of programming efforts involving Extension state and county staff.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an educational outreach organization within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES). The mission of Cooperative Extension at A&T is to provide educational programs that inspire North Carolina’s under-served farmers, individuals, youth, and communities to make decisions to improve their lives. We offer programming in four main areas – 4-H Youth Development, Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), Community and Rural Development (CRD), and Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS). Together with our partners – North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, state and county governments, a dynamic and resourceful system is formed. In addition to campus operations, The Cooperative Extension Program is locally available through the 101 County Extension Centers located in every county in North Carolina and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian Nation (EBCI). The Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T has staff located in approximately half of NC County Extension Centers.
An earned Ph.D./Ed.D. in an academic discipline of agriculture, family and consumer sciences, community development, rural sociology, adult education or closely related field.
Seven years of experience in Cooperative Extension planning, organizing and leading people at the national, state and/or regional/district level. Demonstrated expertise in the development and implementation of successful extension/outreach programming.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of funding policies for federal/state/grant sources. Experience with resource development and monitoring.
Experience communicating effectively with administrators, faculty, limited resource audiences, and other stakeholders. Experience functioning effectively as part of a senior administrative team.
Ability to interact and gain support from constituencies outside the University, such as business and industry, state and federal agencies, non-profits and private foundations.
Preferred Years’ Experience, Skills, training, Education:
Graduate level courses in program development, evaluation, administration, adult education and leadership development.
More than ten years of experience in Cooperative Extension planning, organizing and working with people at the national, state and/or regional/district level.
