Transmission Electron Microscopy Scientist, Stanford Nano Shared Facilities The Stanford Nano Shared Facilities (SNSF) is seeking a Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) scientist to lead the operations of the facilities' FEI Titan Environmental TEM with spherical aberration corrector. The TEM scientist will operate, maintain, and optimize the microscope. He/She will provide training and support to researchers, develop and implement advanced techniques, and engage in research activities. Stanford's shared nanofacilities offer a comprehensive array of advanced nanofabrication and nanocharacterization tools. Over 1,000 researchers make use of the shared facilities each year in order to further their research programs. The goal of the shared facilities at Stanford University is to provide open, cost-effective access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication and nanocharacterization facilities for scientists and engineers from academia, small and large companies, and government laboratories. The FEI Titan TEM is organized under SNSF in the Electron & Ion Microscopy Suite which currently features a FEI Tecnai TEM as well as two FIB/SEMs and two SEMs. The TEM scientist will report to the Faculty Director of SNSF. - Support complex scientific and research programs related to a broad range of advanced TEM techniques, including aberration-corrected imaging, an environmental mode using various gases for in-situ studies, tomography, energy loss spectroscopy and GIF imaging, HAADF imaging, EDS, STEM compositional mapping, in-situ TEM using a range of specialized holders, and holography.
- Analyze data, monitor and oversee experimental processes.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, or senior administrative officers to oversee and conduct complex non-routine analyses, select optimum solutions, and perform corrective modifications to equipment and system designs.
- Carry out all activities, including troubleshooting and resolving routine problems for scientist or engineers, independently. Interface with FEI and other equipment vendor engineers to ensure optimal performance of the microscope and other specialized equipment.
- Participate in the planning, design, and implementation of scientific or engineering initiatives, and work toward project objective.
- Oversee the TEM laboratory space, a range of specialized sample holders, and various support equipment, and possibly supervise the work of others associated with the group.
- Serve as a resource in review of research proposals and research capabilities, and make recommendations.
- Acquaint the Stanford community with the capabilities.
- Establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
- Develop and maintain training manuals and safety guidelines, and train new instrumentation users, researchers, and/or technical staff.
- Stay current with and, as needed, contribute to developing new technologies, techniques, and analytical capabilities in the fields of high-resolution TEM.
- Assist and advise users on the proper specimen preparation techniques for their experiments and materials, and participate in sample preparation training as appropriate.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, or related field, and five or more years of relevant experience in area of Transmission Electron Microscopy, or a PhD in same fields with two or more years of TEM experience. Advanced degree highly desired!
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills of advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy.
- Extensive experience applying complex scientific and engineering principles and performing special technical services involving both development and performance.
- Ability to collaborate with senior engineering and scientific staff to design and develop special purpose equipment and/or systems.
- Experience overseeing the plan, design, and implementation of major scientific or engineering initiatives and ensuring project objective are met.
- Demonstrated ability to review research proposals, evaluate research capabilities, and make recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.
- Experience overseeing a laboratory space or unit and supervising the work of technicians and other staff associated with the group.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and train a diverse work staff.
- Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
- Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.
- Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
- May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers unusual work hours or routine overtime.
