COUNSELOR/LEARNING DISABILITIES SPECIALIST
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under the supervision of the Special Resource Center Director performs services for students with disabilities in the areas of academic and educational guidance and counseling and provides assessment for learning disabilities. This faculty position provides educational plans, serves as an academic advisor to students with disabilities; determines eligibility for services; determines appropriate accommodations, participates in student recruitment and pre-registration activities; teaches DSPS approved courses; and serves as a resource person at the Center for students with learning disabilities. This position will work closely with the Dean of Student Services.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
• Verify student eligibility for services, review medical records and provide educational plans based on academic and vocational goals.
• Identify educational limitations and recommend accommodations to include: interpreters, mobility assistance, note-taking services, reader services, test-taking facilitation, tutoring services, individualized assessment, registration assistance, special orientation, special equipment/materials/software, and specialized matriculation assistance.
• Identify, interview, screen and test referred students for learning disabilities by administering adult cognitive and achievement assessment including Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales IV edition and/or Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities IV edition AND Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement IV and/or Wechsler Individual Achievement Test III.
• Advise students regarding developmental and/or compensatory approaches needed to improve skills and manage their disability.
• Serve as a matriculation/retention agent and provide activities that address the special characteristics, background and experience of students with disabilities to increase persistence and graduation rates.
• Instruct regular or short-term courses as needed or required in accordance with established course outline of record.
• Maintain assessment data and confidential student files in order to certify students’ accommodations based on verified disabilities.
• Coordinate w i t h DSP&S staff a n d general college instructors concerning instructional strategies, universal access, and accommodations for disabled students.
• Promote awareness of Center services for students with disabilities throughout the campus community (students, faculty, staff, administration), and community partners.
• Participate in full-time faculty responsibilities including committee and meeting assignments, program review and planning, curriculum development and student activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
The position requires knowledge of and experience with academic advisement and counseling techniques for students with disabilities in a community college setting; accommodations for students with diverse disabilities; methods of instruction as applied to students with disabilities; the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and all legislation, regulations, and laws applicable to persons with disabilities; adult cognitive and achievement assessment to include, but not limited to, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales IV edition and/or Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Cognitive Abilities IV edition AND Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement IV and/or Wechsler Individual Achievement Test III; principles of universal access; and student retention strategies.
• Requires the ability to carry out all aspects of the position as noted above.
• Requires the ability to deliver instruction and assistance using strategies designed for diverse learning
styles for individuals and/or small groups.
• Communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
• Maintain records and prepare reports.
• Ability to use a personal computer and operate a variety of program and office equipment.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those
from diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds.
• Ability to expand knowledge of applicable laws, rules and regulations pertaining to the Americans with
Disabilities Act that apply to student access to education and information.
• Requires the ability to conduct in-service presentations to small groups.
• Master’s degree or equivalent foreign degree in rehabilitation counseling, OR Master’s degree, or
equivalent foreign degree, in special education, and twenty four or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work, OR Master’s degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development, or social welfare; and either twelve or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following;
(A) Counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; or
(B) Counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social
welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were
predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities, AND
• Master’s degree in learning disabilities, special education, education, psychology, speech language
pathology, communication disorders, educational or school psychology, counseling, or rehabilitation counseling. AND Fifteen semester units of upper division or graduate study in the area of learning disabilities to include, but not limited to, adult cognitive and achievement assessment or the equivalent; AND
• Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of college students, and of individuals with disabilities.
Three years’ experience counseling students with disabilities in educational and career planning; certification in the California Community College Learning Disabilities Eligibility and Services Model (LDESM) and Community College teaching experience.
• Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
• Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to move to various work locations.
• Requires manual hand-eye-arm coordination to use a personal computer keyboard and instructional media equipment.
• Requires sufficient hearing and auditory ability to carry on conversations in one-on-one and small group settings and deliver in-service type training
• Lift up to 25 pounds.
The starting salary ranges from $59,503- $88,193 annually, depending on education and experience. Excellent fringe benefits are included.

Health, Life, Dental and Vision Insurance
The District provides a diversified insured benefit program for all full-time employees including medical, dental, vision and life insurance. Dependent medical, dental, vision, and supplemental disability insurance is available towards which both the District and the employee contribute. Employees not requiring medical coverage may use the District’s fringe benefit contribution to invest in a 403(b) program (tax sheltered annuity). Proof of medical coverage is required.
Sick Leave and Disability Insurance
Paid sick leave is granted equal to one day for each month of service. Sick leave may be accumulated indefinitely. Rather than State Disability Insurance, limited sick leave benefits are available for days beyond the earned sick leave days. Long term disability income protection insurance is also available.
Full-time employees contribute a percentage of their salary to either the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) or the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).

ABOUT EL CAMINO COLLEGE COMPTON EDUCATIONAL CENTER
El Camino Community College District became the partner district to Compton Community College District in August of 2006. Under the agreement with El Camino College, the El Camino College Compton Community Educational Center provides accredited instructional and student support services to our students with and on behalf of the Compton Community College District.
