Responsibilities

The Department of Sociology and the Center for Global Education invite applications for a Continuing Instructor position, beginning August 2017.

• We seek a candidate with passion for teaching and a desire to ignite intellectual curiosity among undergraduates. Experience teaching research methods and race and ethnicity courses are a plus.
• Candidates must have an international scholarship agenda. Those with applied experience in international community development or with community-based organizations are encouraged to apply.
• Our programs aim to capitalize on our diverse campus and surrounding community to enhance the learning experience for all our students; we invite applications from candidates whose experiences and/or interests prepare them to join us in this endeavor.
• The new hire will enjoy a collegial environment that supports innovative teaching as well as opportunities for collaborative scholarship, membership in the Washington Research Library Consortium, and close proximity to Washington, D.C.
The teaching load is 4/4. Each semester three of the courses are in the Sociology Department and one course is with the Global Scholars program of the Center for Global Education. A significant portion of these courses will be introductory level courses. Additional responsibilities include organizing local to global fieldtrips, participating in community engagement projects, coordinating student research projects for the Global Scholars program, or initiating campus-wide activities.

Continuing Instructorships are full-time faculty appointments. These appointments are renewable annually subject to satisfactory performance, need, and availability of resources. The position carries benefits as described by Human Resources at the time of appointment. Continuing Instructors are not eligible for promotion and tenure and may not have their status converted to tenure-track.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Doctorate in sociology (or anticipated degree in hand by December 2017). Commitment to student engagement and departmental initiatives.

Responsibility / Duty

Teaching: Faculty will teach introductory courses and upper-division electives as needed. All sociology courses serve Marymount's liberal arts core curriculum. Courses with the Center for Global Education serve the Global Scholars program. Candidates must be committed to community based learning, experiential pedagogies and programmatic assessment of learning outcomes.

Research: Primary area of research in a field contributing to the SOC program development and the Global Scholars program. Candidates must have an international scholarship agenda. Those with applied experience in international community development or with community-based organizations are encouraged to apply.
