Job Description
Serves as the Radiation Safety Officer for the University of South Carolina System (USCS). Directs and manages department programs in radiation safety, and waste disposal programs for radioactive waste. Supervises a staff of employees to accomplish departmental objectives. Investigates Radiation health and safety concerns from USC employees or the general public. Responsible for the regulatory compliance of radiation emitting materials and devices on all USC campuses by management of the SC Radioactive Material Broad License and the registration of X-ray devices. Oversight of the non-ionizing program to include laser safety.


Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering, or related technical field and 5 years experience in environmental health programs or radiological health; or bachelor's degree in natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering, or related technical field and 7 years experience in environmental health programs or radiological health; or high school diploma and 11 years experience in environmental health programs or radiological health. Must have at least five years of experience in radiation safety.

Position requires extensive knowledge of radiation safety, general safety, and environmental management systems. The incumbent will have the ability to interpret state/federal regulations and will provide guidance in assisting the USCS in compliance with these regulations.


Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree or other advanced degree desirable. Familiar with the regulations for possessing a Broad License to use Radioactive Material and knowledge of X-ray operations. Some knowledge on laser safety and other non-ionizing radiation as well as uses of uranium and thorium in research activities.
