Professional Research Assistant

The Department of Emergency Medicine has an opening for a lead professional research assistant (PRA). The lead PRA will be responsible for providing guidance, coordination, and training for PRAs, undergraduate, graduate and medical students. This position will act as a resource and supervisor for other PRAs in the department. The supervision will require assignment of tasks and monitoring progress, timeliness and quality of task completion. This full-time position will be part of a central pool of research assistants and will help to conduct various clinical research projects in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver. This position will work closely with the department's administration, study investigators, other departments and centers on campus, and associated hospitals and clinics.

Under the direction of the Director of Finance and Administration and guidance from the Vice Chair of Research, the Lead PRA will be assigned various research duties and will report to the relevant Principal investigator (PI) for each specific task.

The main duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Collaborating with faculty investigators and research staff
  • Responsible for providing guidance and training in research-related duties to departmental PRAs and students
  • Providing supervision for PRAs
  • Assisting PIs in allocating duties and tasks to PRAs for various research projects
  • Work with HR Manager to coordinate hiring of PRA positions
  • Collaborate with HR Manager on training and on-boarding of new PRAs
  • Project Coordinator Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide HR support to PRAs
  • Partner with Director of Finance & Administration to evaluate performance of PRAs
  • Screening and enrolling patients in multiple ongoing prospective clinical research protocols
  • Overseeing data collection and data management for clinical research protocols
  • Provide oversight and serve as a backup to PRAs in the department for the following duties:
    • Completing the entire consent process, including approaching patients and explaining study procedures and consent forms, answering questions concerning the studies, and obtaining signatures for informed consent and assent from patients and caregivers
    • Creating and managing research databases and performing data entry
    • Collecting, processing, and storing samples for future research use
    • Abstracting data from patient charts and electronic medical records
    • Conducting in-person and telephone interviews for data collection
    • Delivering study medications and other interventions
  • Assisting with submission of applications and applicable documents (protocol, informed consent, etc.) to Institutional Review Board (IRB)
  • Assisting with submitting protocols to other regulatory bodies if applicable (i.e. University of Colorado Hospital Research Support Services, scientific review committees,, etc.)
  • Assisting with PIs and PRAs on regulatory compliance for departmental research projects
  • Assisting with the writing up of results for manuscripts and presentations
  • Completing other duties necessary for completion of research studies

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • At least 3 years of experience as a research assistant/coordinator
  • At least 2 years of prior supervisory experience
  • Prior experience in clinical research setting
  • Experience in using computer-based tools (Microsoft suite)
  • Database management (e.g., Excel, Access, REDCap)
  • Ability to work some holidays and weekends

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in research-related discipline
  • Research coordination
  • Project management
  • Prior experience in an emergency department or inpatient setting
  • Medical background (e.g., EMT/Paramedic, nursing, medical assistant, medical technician)
