The College of Medicine (COM) at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis seeks an outstanding and dynamic medical educator for the position of Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education and Chair of the Department of Medical Education. The UTHSC COM is a four-campus system with locations in Memphis (main campus), Knoxville, Nashville, and Chattanooga.

Position Overview

UTHSC has established a new Department of Medical Education and consolidated leadership of the education enterprise under the newly created position of Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education. Under the Senior Associate Dean / Chair’s leadership, UTHSC is poised to bolster its curriculum integration and active learning while emphasizing more of its service learning activities, longitudinal required research, and capstone initiatives.

The Senior Associate Dean / Chair reports directly to the Executive Dean of the College of Medicine and is the “go to” person at UTHSC for matters related to medical education. He / she will often speak for the COM Executive Dean regarding medical student education. As Senior Associate Dean, he / she will oversee the offices of the assistant deans for clinical education, basic science education, and clinical integration. As Chair of the Department of Medical Education, he/she will recruit faculty into the Department of Medical Education, provide guidance, and promote faculty development in teaching while leading the process of curriculum reform and implementation of a system of integrated teaching, learning, and assessment.

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead for the Office of Medical Education and the Department of Medical Education.
  • Create a plan and vision for the continued delivery of innovative medical school education.
  • Lead Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) compliance activities by following-up from and planning for site visits and reports.
  • Stay abreast with and disseminate proposed / new changes in LCME standards ensuring a system of continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the offices of Student Affairs and Student Admissions and collaborate with the leadership of Graduate Medical Education.
  • Serve as the University of Tennessee’s Executive Dean’s delegate to Association of American Medical Colleges’ Group on Educational Affairs.
  • Develop the faculty of the Department of Medical Education and other UT educators by encouraging and supporting their development, their educational scholarship, and their research.
  • Oversee and serve as the administrative contact in the Dean’s Office for the Physician Assistant (PA) program in collaboration with the PA Program Director and Chair of the Department of PA Studies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.D. or equivalent (preferred); Ph.D. or Ed.D. with experience in medical education.
  • At least 5 years of experience in medical education leadership with extensive experience in curriculum design, implementation, and assessment, including working with faculty and others across disciplines.
  • Eligible for appointment at the rank of professor.
  • A passion for education and knowledge of the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Recognized presence with medical educational organizations at the national level.
  • Fiscal experience, including requesting and monitoring budget and other resources for the educational enterprise.
  • Demonstrated strong management, organizational, pedagogical skills and knowledge of medical education.
  • Strong record as a superior medical-educator.
  • Significant administrative and leadership experience in medical education, programming, and development of a medical school curriculum.
  • Experience with or support of unique/innovative methods for teaching.
  • An ability to champion education and a passion for the advancement of education.
  • A strong commitment to students reflected by past activity.
  • Experience in developing a strategic plan for medical education.
  • The ability to work with multiple stakeholders and a reputation as bridge builder.
  • A reputation for dynamic and clear communications.
  • High energy and strong work ethic while working effectively within a broader academic environment.
  • Strong organization and process-management skills.

UTHSC College of Medicine

The College of Medicine offers programs leading to the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. The College of Medicine also participates in the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)/Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) combined degree program as well as provides active participation in the programs offered by the College of Graduate Health Sciences (M.S., Ph.D.) and the Physician Assistant (PA) program. The College of Medicine also provides extensive training in Graduate Medical Education (GME). Four fully integrated locations - Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Nashville - constitute the UTHSC College of Medicine.

Medical students from the College of Medicine spend their first two years on the Memphis Campus and then rotate on all four campuses for clinical training. GME programs, active research, and clinical practice programs are present on all four College of Medicine campuses. Currently, the COM has approximately 656 medical students and over 1100 residents and fellows in 84 GME training programs. Gross revenues for the COM exceed $400M annually with greater than $70 million in research revenues. Multiple physician practice groups make up the COM faculty practice arm with the largest number of faculty being members of University Clinical Health (UCH).
