Job Description:

SUNY Empire State College seeks a part-time (50%) Assistant to the Director (State title: Staff Assistant) in the Office of Campus Safety and Security. The Staff Assistant will be under the direction of the Director of Campus Safety and Security and will be responsible for the general protection of personnel, buildings, grounds, and equipment at Empire State College. The position will assist in the oversight of all issues concerning criminal, medical, fire and environmental safety response, both in the coordinating center in Saratoga Springs and our other 34 locations throughout the state. All duties or tasks are to be carried out in an honest, ethical, and professional manner, and will be performed in accordance with applicable college policies and procedures. This position reports to the Director of Campus Safety and Security and in absence the Senior Director of Operations/Assistant Vice President of Administration.  

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist the Director in planning/directing all activities of the Office of Campus Safety and Security
  • Assist with the department's compliance with the Campus Safety (Jeanne Clery) Act and related reporting
  • Assist and coordinate response to college crime and emergencies
  • Assist and coordinate the operations of all special events
  • Assist with the planning, revision and implementation of emergency procedures
  • Assist the Director in the management, development, and programming of college security systems (access control, intrusion, & CCTV)
  • Act as a liaison and coordinator between locations, departments, college administration, SUNY System Administration (Office of University Police), Federal, State and local Law Enforcement and Emergency Response agencies
  • Assist and help coordinate the fire safety programs and security related training programs for the college, including but not limited to; Workplace Violence Training, Active Shooter Training and Campus Security Authority Training
  • Assist with maintaining an ongoing security risk assessment for college operated facilities and events
  • Work collaboratively as part of the campus Incident Response Team
  • Coordinates and oversees the College-wide Safety and Security Committee
  • Receive and investigate reported incidents college-wide and formulate written reports
  • Participate in continuous learning and professional development
  • Assist the Director with various administrative functions, and updating policies and procedures as needed or required
  • Routine vehicle/foot patrols of campus lots and buildings

Specific Skills/Abilities:

 Must possess the ability to:

  • Respond quickly to emergency calls, conduct thorough investigations into incidences and prepare written reports
  • Work with confidential and sensitive data
  • Communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students and college officials, and other constituents
  • Manage information with accuracy and attention to detail and resolve problems promptly with tact and courtesy
  • Demonstrate service orientation; work harmoniously within a team centered environment
  • Manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Work independently and think strategically using sound judgment
  • Work with diverse constituents and ability to travel to various college locations as required
  • Work collaboratively with others and deal with all various levels of administration

 Requirements:

  • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field
  • 7 years' of progressively responsible law enforcement, security, or military experience is required, 3 years' of which must have been in a supervisory capacity
  • A minimum of 3 years of related work experience in a higher education setting is required
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local Laws including extensive knowledge of Campus Security Act (Jeanne Clery)
  • Demonstrated strong organizational leadership, interpersonal, conflict management and resolution skills, as well as effective written/oral communication skills, and the ability to build relationships within the college community are expected
  • Experience in criminal/Internal investigations
  • Experience with security based software systems including access control and CCTV systems
  • New York security guard license or waiver
  • Hold a valid driver's license
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, on a scheduled or an on call basis
  • Possess current CPR, AED Certification
  • Incident command certifications FEMA-ICS 100, 700-NIMS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Knowledge of VAWA and Title IX Compliance and reporting
  • Knowledge of New York State Fire Safety Compliance in a higher education setting
  • Demonstrated experience as an Instructor

Special Information: 

  • VISA sponsorship is not available for this position
  • The successful candidate will be required to travel on occasion to any of the College's locations throughout the State
  • The possibility of working occasional hours outside the normal work parameters may be required
  • Monday-Friday, 20 hours per week

Rank/Salary:  $25,000
