Job Description

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montclair State University seeks applicants for a tenured-faculty position with open faculty rank to serve as the Department Chairperson. The successful candidate will provide leadership for the Department by promoting the development of research activities and educational programs, effective handling of administrative responsibilities, as well as by articulating the Department's scientific and educational mission within the University and to the broader community. In addition to the requisite academic qualifications, candidates should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as a demonstrated ability to manage administrative functions in an academic environment.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences comprises the disciplines of applied mathematics, pure mathematics, mathematics education, physics, and statistics, with a total of 29 full-time, tenured and tenure-track faculty. The Department offers a number of bachelors and masters degree programs in mathematics, physics, and statistics, as well as a PhD program in mathematics education. Additionally, some members of the Department faculty are affiliated with the interdisciplinary PhD program in Environmental Management. Montclair State University is New Jersey's second-largest university, with over 20,000 students and is a Research Doctoral University under the Carnegie classification of higher-education institutions as well as a state-designated Research University. The University has a highly diverse student body and has met the criteria to be a Federally-designated Hispanic-Serving Institution.



Qualifications & Requirements

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a field related to the disciplines represented within the Department of Mathematical Sciences, and a sustained record of research activity that includes scholarly publications as well as a record of securing and successfully managing externally funded grant awards. In addition, the applicant must show evidence of effective teaching, mentoring students in research, as well as strong administrative and leadership experience.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in: undergraduate and graduate education (e.g., curriculum development, student recruitment, best practices in teaching); mentoring faculty; program assessment and assessment-driven program development; the development of proposals for multi-investigator or institutionally significant externally funded grant awards; interdisciplinary or cross-disciplinary collaborative research and educational activities.




Salary Range
Commensurate with experience.
