Director of Student Success and Diversity; Program Manager, LSAMP
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Director of Student Success and Diversity will provide services intended to address the recruitment, retention and graduation rate of all students in the College of Natural Sciences (CNS), with a special focus on underrepresented students. The Director will implement and use data from the Student Success Collaborative (SSC) platform to facilitate student success. As well as designing, executing and managing assessment activities; coordinating with other campus units relative to assessment, diversity and student success; and preparing and reporting findings that inform CNS's goal-setting programming, services and strategic planning for student success and diversity.
The Director will also serve as the Program Manager of Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) at UMass Amherst and will oversee the UMass Amherst participation in the Northeast Alliance of LSAMP. This will include coordinating efforts with other campuses in the Northeast, developing and teaching seminars for students (freshmen, junior and senior level), assisting students in placement within a research lab and advising students on participation in international experiences, and overseeing the NSF-funded LASAMP budget for UMass Amherst.
- Data Collection and Assessment: Develop CNS Student Success Strategic Plan and review yearly. Collaborate with on-campus offices (OIR, OAPA, etc) to support success initiatives. Design, execute and manage assessment activities that monitors student process toward degree completion.
- Retention: Recommend and lead strategies to impact the retention of under-represented minorities, first generation students and females. Form relationships with the University partners including the Learning Resource Center, departmental advisors, CMASS, etc.
- Program Manager LSAMP: Teach seminars as part of the LSAMP program (Freshmen, Junior and Senior). Plan and direct LSAMP program events throughout the academic year. Meet regularly with students in the LSAMP on a 1:1 basis to provide academic coaching to support their applications to undergraduate research programs, track their academic progress, support their applications to graduate programs and fellowships in STEM. Review student academic progress toward graduation as required by NSF. Review students for funding eligibility to conferences, graduate school interviews, study abroad programs, etc. Direct, manage and oversee all administrative and fiscal activity related to the LSAMP grant. Manage and oversee expenditures and assure expenditures are compliant with the program. Reconcile expenses on a regular basis against invoices and purchase orders. Prepare re-budget submission. Collaborate with Research affairs and CNS Finance office to monitor NSF grand-funded activity. Provide eligible students with funding to conferences, graduate school interviews, study abroad programs, etc.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Provost for Diversity in the recruitment of students from diverse backgrounds including students transferring from community colleges. Develop a year-long plan to support the needs of transfer students in CNS. Collaborate with the Associate Provost for Student Success to ensure the retention of students and improving the graduation rate.
- Assess the effectiveness of CNS success and retention programs for continuous improvement and report to the Dean and Associate Deans as needed. Utilize the Student Success Collaborative Platform to develop campaigns to reach out to students to ensure student success.
- Understand and apply the University Academic Regulations. Provides information about the curriculum and departments to prospective CNS students off campus partners.
- Master’s Degree in Education; related STEM field, Science, Psychology, Engineering plus five years of grant writing/supervision; higher education advising, experience working with college students from diverse backgrounds is required. Doctoral/terminal degree in Education; related STEM Field, Science; Psychology; Engineering plus two years of grant writing/supervision; higher education advising, experience working with college students from diverse backgrounds is preferred.
- Experience in working with students in a higher education academic setting, working with students from underrepresented backgrounds, required.
- Sensitivity to, and experience with culturally diverse (African-American, Latino/a, Asian, Native American, and other underrepresented populations (females, low income, first generation college students) in STEM, required
- Strong team orientation and ability to collaborate with internal and external constituents, required.
- Strong organizational and planning skills and efficiency in handling multiple projects, required.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills required.
- Required to work some nights and weekends.
