Position Summary: This position establishes, manages, and promotes all study abroad programs in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. It requires close collaboration within the Study Abroad Office with those responsible for advising, finance and operations, and outside the Study Abroad Office with academic units that sponsor and support each study abroad program. The successful management of programs entails ensuring that each is financially viable and articulates closely with the on-campus academic curriculum, and regular and effective communication with foreign partner universities, institutions and service providers. The position is also responsible for putting in place administrative and logistical arrangements for proprietary UNC-CH study abroad programs in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. Program management requires availability to deal with emergencies on a 24/7 basis.
Education Requirements: Master's degree with an emphasis in area studies in at least one of the world regions, International Studies, language and cultural studies, or other related field. Preference may be given to candidates with a PhD in a relevant field.
Qualification and Experience: Proficiency in at least one language in at least one of the world regions, together with study, work and/or travel experience in one or more of the world regions is required. Preference may be given to candidates with experience in the Spanish-speaking world. Applicants must also have at least five years of administrative program experience in international education within a higher education setting and/or at least five years of relevant teaching experience in a higher education setting relative to the regional focus of the position. Demonstrated cultural competency in at least one of the world regions, excellent communication skills, experience of cross-cultural issues abroad, and a willingness to travel are also required.
