The University of Toronto invites applications for an Executive Director to lead Medicine by Design, an integrated program of outstanding research that is a globally competitive hub for discovering, manufacturing and commercializing biologics to treat chronic and degenerative disease to improve health and create long-term economic benefits for Canadians.
The mandate of Medicine by Design is to undertake transformative research and clinical translation in regenerative medicine, enhance capability in synthetic biology and computational biology, and foster translation, commercialization and clinical impacts. MbD was jointly conceived by The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), University Health Network (UHN), Sinai Health System, and the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Applied Science & Engineering, and Arts & Science at the University of Toronto (U of T), and enabled by an unprecedented $114 million grant from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund in 2015. The funding allows the University and its partners to deliver new programs building on years of support for our regenerative medicine researchers, from federal granting councils, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ontario Ministry of Research, Innovation and Science, and support from the Canada Research Chairs and Canada Excellence Research Chairs programs. Medicine by Design is greatly facilitated by U of T's integrated system of specialized research facilities dedicated to basic and applied research, clinical translation, advanced manufacturing and commercialization, such as the Translational Biology and Engineering Program, a key component of the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, and the Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine.
In its first two years, MbD has provided funding worth a total of over $30 million over three years to more than 100 researchers and clinicians to fast track stem cell research. The majority of funds in this first investment are focused on highly interdisciplinary team projects. In collaboration with hospitals, partners and industry, projects include research into fundamental questions in regenerative medicine, innovations that are expected to be ready for clinical trials within a few years, and enabling technologies that have the potential to accelerate discoveries across the field. A key Clinical Translation and Commercialization Fund competition was launched January 2017. Further rounds of funding will be supported to 2022.
Medicine by Design's ambitious goal requires commitment, energy and exceptional leadership. As its scientific leader, the Executive Director will help drive a collaborative research program with accountability to an executive committee composed of the Vice-Presidents, Research from the participating hospitals and the Deans of the participating Faculties. Core duties include leadership in program delivery and review, faculty and clinician recruitment, internationalization, partnerships and collaborations, clinical translation and commercialization, knowledge mobilization and external relations, and operational and financial stewardship. Appointment as the Executive Director will be for a five-year term.
As the ideal candidate, you have a reputation befitting a researcher of global renown. You personify collaboration and excellence in research or clinical practice and knowledge translation, and bring to MbD an established record of research leadership in environments that span basic and clinical sciences. You are a skilled relationship builder, a gifted communicator and a respected representative for scientific excellence who works exceptionally well with all stakeholders, including researchers, health-care professionals, institutional leaders, government agencies, donors and the general public. The successful candidate must have an established record of scholarly achievement, and be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.
