Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred. Coursework in communication arts strongly preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
-Minimum of one year of experience working with students in a higher education setting, preferably at UW-Madison.
-Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and/or with diverse personalities.
-Ability to exercise judgment in student academic affairs and to maintain confidentiality.
-Familiarity with (or ability to learn) DARS, SIS, and Query Library applications.
-Ability to deal with stressful situations, interruptions, and conflicting demands.
-Self-motivated and able to multitask efficiently and effectively.
-Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
-Strong verbal and written communication skills.
-Attention to detail and organizational skills required.
-Familiarity with academic programs and resources on the UW-Madison campus preferred.
-Experience with social media preferred.
-Experience with media production preferred.
The Communication Arts Department seeks a part-time academic advisor. This position assists Communication Arts majors and prospective majors as they explore educational opportunities and complete their degrees.
The schedule is somewhat flexible but must reflect peak student advising demands. This position reports to the Chair. Evaluation will encompass all duties outlined in the position description but will primarily focus on performance relative to departmental targets for the number of advising meetings handled per semester. Interviews are tentatively planned for the week of June 12, 2017.
