Position Information: The Safety Mentor will implement campus laboratory safety program activities and assist department laboratory personnel in addressing safety issues. Ensures personnel are familiar with safety protocols, knowledgeable of lab-specific procedures and resources. Conducts laboratory safety inspections, hazard assessments; coordinates with departments participating in the self-audit program. Identifies and recommends corrective action as necessary; assist departments in implementation of corrective actions. Assists in the development and delivery of safety training, such as biosafety, bloodborne, and other required trainings. Safety Mentors act as liaisons between EHS and various personnel in addressing common concerns that arise across multiple and various disciplines. Participates as a member of the Emergency Response Team as requested.

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge of biological and animal labs practices and procedures. Familiarity with various types of research environments and associated safety requirements and protocols.
Demonstrated written and verbal communications skills, ability to develop and provide trainings and presentation;must be able to work independently or in a group setting as needed. Proven ability and willingness to interact with and effectively communicate regulations and instructions to faculty, staff, students and the public. Ability and willingness to achieve objectives and tasks in a timely manner. Strong collaborative style; position requires an inclusive approach to engaging stakeholders in ways that lead to optimal and realized solutions.
Solid organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple projects.
Solid, comprehensive working knowledge/understanding of a specific EH&S field including related laws and regulations, and general understanding of all EH&S fields.
Working skills in the appropriate use of technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.
Demonstrated knowledge of standard laboratory procedures and proper use of various types of equipment and handling/storage/disposal of various types of chemicals commonly found in a research setting.
Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
