Position Summary

Processing and testing specimens from animals for diagnostic purposes using PCR-based assays and serologic test methods; operating and maintaining scientific instruments; organizing and analyzing data, and entering and retrieving information from the Laboratory Information Management System; performing quality control procedures and maintaining quality control records; storing and disposing of laboratory specimens; communicating with laboratory staff, veterinarians and clients to provide information and lab results; working cooperatively with other laboratory personnel in an environment of problem-solving and process improvement.  Attention to detail is critical. Work time is shared between the Virology laboratory and the ELISA Zone and requires some flexibility of scheduling.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic laboratory techniques; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training. 

Desired Qualifications

Experience in antibody and antigen detection methods and/or experience in PCR based procedures; experience in laboratory safety; experience in the use of laboratory information systems and computer software; strong communication and customer service skills; ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced and demanding environment, multi-tasking and meeting deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work.

Work Hours

Work hours are Mon through Fri, between 7:30 AM & 5:30 PM, and may vary to include weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
