Mediator (Clinical Assistant Professor) (Family Studies & Human Services)


General Description of Position: The Kansas State University’s Conflict Resolution program seeks a conflict resolution scholar and state-approved mediator to coordinate all functions of a mediation program, teach courses in conflict resolution, and be responsible for identifying and writing grants to support the program initiatives


  1. Coordinating The Collaborative (experiential learning lab), which consists of accepting referrals from the county courts, contacting clients and scheduling intake sessions, assigning appropriate mediator and student co-mediator, scheduling meeting time and space, collecting all necessary forms post-mediation for program and courts, conducting quarterly information meetings for all program affiliates, and serve as a liaison between court personnel, clients, and mediators/students.
  2. Conducting domestic mediation services, and professionally mentoring Kansas State University students who wish to become state-approved mediators.
  3. Teaching conflict resolution courses, and creating new innovative professional development opportunities for current and future mediators.
  4. Identifying and writing grants to help support program initiatives.
Information about the College: Kansas State University offers the opportunity for students to earn a certificate in conflict resolution, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Certificate in Conflict Resolution offers students the fundamentals of conflict resolution and practice. While the program is designed for students who want introductory training in the field of conflict resolution, it is also ideal for lifelong learners who already have either a bachelor's or master's degree and would benefit from academic study of conflict analysis and resolution so they can apply their knowledge in their current professional settings. All courses are offered on campus and online (distance education). 

An offshoot of these two certificate programs has been the development of an experiential learning laboratory (The Collaborative) an applied learning program for students who plan to pursue careers working with children and families, and specifically, for those students seeking state-approval as mediators.  This program is a collaboration between the 21st and 8th judicial districts in Kansas, Kansas State University, and the Advisory Council on Dispute Resolution for the State of Kansas.  This innovative program provides quality, affordable domestic mediation service for families in Manhattan and surrounding communities, provides children with the opportunity to develop and maintain positive relations with each of their parents/guardians post-divorce, through the development of a mutually acceptable parenting plan, establishes a training model for students in conflict resolution where they can be professionally mentored by state-approved mediators at no additional cost, and contributes to the field by collecting data and collaboratively participating in research on high-conflict parenting education, mediation with military families, and virtual mediation approaches.

About the School:

The School of Family Studies and Human Services consists of six units each with lead coordinators: Communication Sciences and Disorders, Early Childhood Education, Family Studies, Life-Span Human Development, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Personal Financial Planning as well as Specialists in K-State Research and Extension. Additional certificate programs are offered in Conflict Resolution, Youth Development, and Personal Financial Planning, a minor in Conflict Analysis and Trauma Studies, as well as programs offered through Great Plains-Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GP-IDEA) including Youth Development, Family and Community Services, Personal Financial Planning, and Financial Therapy. Faculty are extensively involved in distance education at the bachelor, master’s, and doctoral levels and certificate programs. The School operates an early childhood laboratory school, a speech and hearing clinic, a marriage and family therapy clinic, and a personal financial planning and financial therapy clinic. The School's facilities span four buildings and two campuses. There are currently 62 faculty members in the School, nearly 800 undergraduates and 271 graduate students. The work of the School is conducted by over 190 faculty, staff, and student assistants.  The School has established four priority areas for research and programming: 1) Health and Security of Military Families; 2) Personal and Family Risk Behaviors; 3) Disorders of Communication and Swallowing; 4) Families, Illness, and Health.

  • Master’s Degree in Human Services area (Social Sciences, Social Work, etc.)
  • Minimum of 12 credit hours of conflict resolution training at the graduate level
  • Experience teaching at the university level for at least one year
  • Kansas State-Approved Mediator
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Completed some formal training in grant writing and application of grants
  • Experience in budget development, report writing, and contract work
  • Experience in collaborating and/or coordinating with multiple community agencies
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member to meet strategic goals
  • Evidence of technical capability using software related to project management and course development
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Human Services area, or to receive Ph.D. within 18 months of appointment
  • Experience with event coordination and planning
  • Knowledge and experience working with military families
  • Public speaking and/or experience with marketing and working with the media
  • Knowledge and ability both develop and implement research projects
  • Ability to develop program evaluation measurement tools and to implement recommendations
