The Software Sourcing Lead position is a part of the award winning Vendor Management team in University IT (UIT) at Stanford. The Vendor Management team manages academic software licensing campus wide and handles all vendor related issues for UIT, which includes negotiating technology product purchases and assisting the engineering team in managing vendor performance, etc.

This is a position for a seasoned strategic sourcing professional with a proven track record and expertise in negotiating and managing software technology vendors and contracts. She or he will focus on negotiating and administering academic and administrative software licenses and managing related vendors for Stanford. This will include developing, negotiating and implementing licensing models and strategies to best meet the University's needs.

CORE DUTIES*:

  • Lead complex negotiation for acquiring technology products for University IT and campus, with special focus on software licenses.
  • Manage vendor lifecycle activities such as vendor business performance reviews, support contract renewals, vendor conflict resolutions, etc.
  • Manage the sourcing process for the organization's IT department. Oversee the evaluation and selection of vendors, negotiation of purchase contracts including business terms& conditions, pricing and service level agreement.
  • Manage the Stanford software licensing portal run on a third party vendor platform. Respond to internal inquiries related to software license terms, cost, availability, eligibility for managed vendors; Coordinate vendor technical support for software download and distribution for end users.
  • Working with internal clients and Finance to develop, recommend and implement strategy for academic licensing models that result in internal cost recovery of licensing expenses.
  • Manage vendor relationships; resolve complex problems with vendors or products to ensure that vendors meet or exceed their contract obligations by delivering quality products and services.
  • Oversee report preparation and analysis requiring the consolidation of multiple, complex data sources to track vendor performance and renewals.
  • Identify and resolve complex issues which may span multiple areas, apply ingenuity and creativity to problem analysis and resolution

- Other duties may also be assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree with minimum of seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Preference would be given to someone who has hands on experience in managing academic software license vendors. Proven experience in negotiating software and other technology product acquisition preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • In depth knowledge of academic software products and vendors. (SAS, SPSS, Mathworks, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of hardware procurement, software licensing, statement of work and service level agreement principles.
  • Expert knowledge of vendor management, sourcing and contract management concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to conduct complex vendor negotiations to drive down cost and achieve better business terms and conditions.
  • Ability to lead IT sourcing projects that have a broad University level impact.
  • Strong research skills, ability to conduct bench marking analysis in support of vendor selection and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and, decision-making skills.
  • Trouble shooting experience for academic software download and deployment a plus.
  • Participates in the vendor selection of the company's product and service providers, and guide the sourcing and vendor management aspect of key IT projects.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills. Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, and all levels of management.
  • Demonstrated creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and, decision-making skills.

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks;
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly, fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weight 11-20 pounds.
