Position Summary:

We are seeking an Assistant Professor with a specialization in Elementary Education. We are particularly interested in individuals with Teacher Education FOCI in Elementary Mathematics Education or Science Education. In addition, we are looking for individuals committed to Education Equity and K-5 schooling in culturally diverse communities. Coordinates field-based experiences for all professional education placements in PK-5 schools for the Department of Education.                                                                                  Saint Augustine’s University holds national accreditation with NCATE and is approved by North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.  As a faculty member, the individual will teach nine (9) credit hours per semester.

Responsibilities:               

  • Coordinating placements, sites and supervision, working with school administrators, teachers and field personnel to identify and maintain successful field experiences and supervision of teacher certification candidates in their student teaching practicum.
  • Perform analysis of certification eligibility and assist students with completion of forms and counsels on requirements.
  • The position requires regular office hours which includes working with walk-in student traffic.
  • Candidates are expected to conduct scholarly research for publication and presentation and be committed to personal development and service to the campus and university’s community.
  • Work is performed under minimal supervision and evaluation is based on acceptable completion of assigned duties.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

 

 

  • Master’s degree in Elementary Education.
  • Previous higher education teaching and research experience.
  • Record of scholarly publications and potential for external funding.
  • Teacher certification in North Carolina.
  • Demonstrate commitment and ability to work effectively within a diverse university learning and teaching environment.
  • Understanding of higher education systems.
  • Experience working with underserved populations and on equity issues in teacher education.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of best teaching practices for elementary classrooms.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school districts, college faculty and college students.
  • Counsel undergraduate students within the education programs on student teaching and certification requirements and procedures.
  • Compose correspondences to student concerning changes in requirements and updates on programs and policies.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding departmental policies and certification issues, by phone, email and in person.

Must be able to lift, carry and or move up to 25 pounds.
