General Description of Position: The Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is currently seeking applicants for a Research Assistant to work in the Rabies Laboratory.  The personnel in this position manages the RFFIT testing area, special projects and investigational experiments as well as internal reagents and proficiency programs. The personnel will conduct tests in the rabies laboratory including the performance of rabies antibody analyses on human and animal sera including serum neutralization and ELISA assays, the interpretation and reporting of serological and diagnostic results, and maintaining the quality system through documentation, review, and trend analysis for all tests as well as corrective action reports and ensuring the quality of test results. The person in this position will also assist with program operations including analysis or results, process and preparation of results; monitoring quality control data; accuracy of test result entry; SOP precision and necessary updates; monitoring supplies usage and timely ordering. The university actively seeks candidates whose commitments and contributions will advance the University's commitment to the Principles of Community which can be found at  Job Description: Project Management: Review Special Project requests and associated Study Memos and contracts to ensure compliance with testing requirements in agreements and regulatory standards, direct resources (staffing, reagents, supplies, storage) for completion, and review final records for accuracy and completeness. Manage, document, and direct activities for internal reagent preparation, use, and storage, including freezer inventory and sample destruction. Manage internal and external proficiency programs. Analyze proficiency test results, prepare reports, and communicate with participants. Mange staff schedules and be involved in staff hiring process.


Quality System: Perform quality assessment and quality control documentation needed for the Rabies Lab to stay in compliance with regulations, assist in SOP updates, and Corrective Actions. Prepare and review SOPs related to Special Projects. Train staff and perform competency assessments. Assist the Laboratory Director in audit preparation and document reviews.


Rabies Serological Assays: Includes sample preparation, serum dilutions, virus growth and dilution, cell staining, and microscopic reading of slides with calculation of results. Data entry of test submissions, test results, and quality control tracking and report generation.


Customer Service: Assisting in customers via phone, email, and fax. Receive phone, email, and fax requests for Special Projects, evaluate requests, answer questions, and communicate draft proposals. Provide assistance with clients concerning test submission, result interpretation, rabies vaccination protocols, and how that relates to the testing the laboratory does. Provide assistance with clients concerning rabies diagnostic issues.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS in Biology or related sciences
  • Three or more years of laboratory experience
  • Project management experience including computer programs and construction/use of formulas in excel
  •  Highly proficient computer skills including databases, spreadsheets, word processing and data entry are required The applicant must have excellent written and oral, interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills One year experience in project management
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two or more years of laboratory experience in cell biology, clinical laboratory test procedures and quality review.
  • Previous laboratory work in a CLIA certified laboratory or performing GXP laboratory testing.
  • Prior supervisory experience as plus.
