I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

GW Libraries and Academic Innovation, the nexus for cross-disciplinary collaboration across campus, is responsible for online learning programs, academic technology, and faculty teaching initiatives. Encompassing Gelman, Eckles, and VSTC, the GW Libraries support the research and learning goals of undergraduates, graduates, and faculty of the university in a highly collaborative, dynamic, and deeply engaged intellectual community. Reporting to the Director of Communications and Outreach, the Web Designer works within the Division's Web Project team.

The Web Designer is responsible for the following duties:

  • Maintaining primary responsibility for the user experience of the entire web presence of GW Libraries and Academic Innovation (GWLAI).
  • Creating the look, layout, and features for the GWLAI web presence with an eye for clean and artful web design and superior user interface design.
  • Working closely with the Web Developer, Web Producer, and other members of the web team, the Web Designer ensures each web presence adheres to GWLAI's visual standards, displays the highest level of customer service, and furthers the goals of the organization while working in a highly collaborative, team environment with shared responsibilities and overlapping areas of expertise.
  • Designing responsive websites and web tools, including the theming layer for Drupal sites. Designing graphic assets for websites, digital signage, and print media in keeping with GW's graphic standards.
  • Developing and maintaining the pattern library for each web property.
  • Creating wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site maps to communicate interaction and design ideas.
  • Working in collaboration with web developers to test and implement changes to web properties.
  • Following LAI web development procedures for ticketing, version control and repository management.
  • Building interactive features (galleries, interactive floor maps, search box behavior) using JavaScript and jQuery.
  • Maintaining documentation on design projects and Drupal themes.
  • Implementing design changes as needed.
  • Ensuring web designs comply with W3C AA accessibility standards.
  • Ensuring web designs function across platforms (browsers, devices, operating systems) as intended.

The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience working in CSS, JS/JQuery, and HTML.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience with Drupal theming (both Drupal 7 and 8 preferred).
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience with code repositories and version control (Git preferred).
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience with Drupal WCMS features and functionality (including Views, Blocks and User Permissions).
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience with command line tools running in a Linux shell (terminal).
  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign and Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development process.
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and effectively.
  • Up-to-date with the latest web trends, techniques, best practices, and technologies.
