The University of Colorado Police Department is accepting applications for an opportunity to become a Police Dispatch Trainee. No experience is required.

The Police Dispatch Trainee is a full-time, entry-level position for training and developing skills towards becoming a Police Dispatcher. The six to twelve month training process utilizes a system of modules to acquaint the trainee with the elements of public safety dispatching, with escalating levels of independence and responsibility. We are looking for someone with excellent critical thinking and memory recall skills who is able to remain calm under stress.

Upon completing training, the Dispatch Trainee will be reclassified as a Police Dispatcher. Police Dispatchers protect the lives, health, safety and property of the public by expeditiously receiving, analyzing, interpreting, evaluating and prioritizing multiple simultaneous emergency requests for law- enforcement, fire, ambulance and rescue services and allocating, deploying and monitoring the activities of responding units.

What your key responsibilities will be:
  • Protects the lives, health, safety and property of the public by expeditiously receiving, analyzing, interpreting, evaluating and prioritizing multiple simultaneous emergency requests for law- enforcement, fire, ambulance and rescue services and allocating, deploying and monitoring the activities of responding units
  • Provides service to the University community, the general public, other public safety departments and outside agencies by receiving, analyzing, interpreting, evaluating and prioritizing multiple simultaneous non-emergency requests for information and assistance
  • Directs requests to appropriate personnel, department or agency for resolution
  • Provides communications and information resource support for field units and outside agencies under various appropriate mutual aid agreements

Monthly Salary Range: $2,880 - $3,026

  • This is an essential services position. The incumbent is required to respond after hours, during emergencies and report to work for regular assigned shift during emergency campus closures.
  • The incumbent must be available to work a flexible work schedule, including long shifts, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

What we require:
  • Must be a current Colorado resident in order to apply.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • During the training period, the candidate will need to gain a combination of education and experience sufficient to ensure that following satisfactory completion of the training period, he/she will meet the requirements of the class to which the position will be assigned.
  • Responsibilities of this position require the ability to see a color computer monitor and hear at normal functioning levels.
  • In order to gain access to the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) security clearance this position is subject to a comprehensive pre-placement background check, including: criminal history, financial, motor vehicle, psychological, polygraph, and medical exam.

As part of the background check process, finalists will be requested to complete a personal history questionnaire.




What you will need:
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to type at least 35 words per minute.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including knowledge of the English language.
  • Excellent critical thinking and memory recall skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under stress.
  • Strong multi-tasking, prioritization and reasoning skills.

What we'd like you to have:
  • Previous experience in police radio/telephone communication equipment operations.
  • Familiarity with CAD (computer aided dispatch).
  • Strong interest in law enforcement.

Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are most highly qualified.
