Job Summary/Basic Function:
Coordinate and supervise the STAR (Student Tutoring and Retention) Services Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (SI) programs.

The Tutoring and SI Coordinator is a full-time professional staff position who is responsible for continued development, planning, and implementation of tutoring and SI programs designed to help students succeed at Lamar University. This position reports to the Director of STAR Services and collaborates extensively within STAR Services, as well as across campus with academic and student service departments, faculty, and staff.

Manage and develop tutoring and SI services:

  • Manage multiple centers across campus, including The LU Tutoring Center, The Language Lab, The ASL (American Sign Language) Lab, and Athletics
  • Schedule all student appointments and sessions
  • Assess and update policies and procedures
  • Design and implement marketing and strategic plans
  • Use administrative software, higher education computer systems, and electronic resources

    Oversee professional and student staff:

  • Supervise the Administrative Assistant for tutoring
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise tutors and SI Leaders
  • Determine and create tutors' and SI Leaders' schedules
  • Observe and evaluate all staff
  • Assist with payroll processes

    Collaborate and communicate effectively with STAR Services staff and campus:

  • Meet regularly with STAR Services' staff and Director
  • Maintain and update websites, social media, and marketing materials
  • Create and provide workshops and presentations to faculty, staff, and students
  • Serve on committees relevant to the mission of STAR Services
  • Represent STAR Services in community and campus events that may occur outside of normal work hours
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director

    Assess, evaluate, and develop tutoring and SI programs:

  • Gather and utilize data, as well as collaborate with departments and instructors, to deliver programming to meet student and campus needs
  • Research and use the most current best practices in tutoring, SI, and student success
  • Keep thorough records to monitor the academic progress, persistence, and retention of program participants
  • Evaluate program effectiveness through appropriate assessment measures
  • Complete mid-year and annual reports
  • Provide data and reports to the Director of STAR Services as requested
  • Participate in professional conferences and individual professional development

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with one year relevant experience required. Knowledge of tutoring and Supplemental Instruction, learning development theory, best practices in thinking and learning strategies, superior oral/written communication skills, computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft applications, high level organizational and interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds are necessary for this position.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Master’s degree preferred

    Experiences preferred include at least three years working individually with college students; knowledge of university educational system and student retention programming.
