Dean of the Silberman School of Social Work
Hunter College of The City University of New York invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. Hunter College and its Silberman School of Social Work have national reputations as leaders in public urban education. Established in 1958, Hunter's Silberman School of Social Work prepares students for responsible, advanced, and creative practice in social work with a particular focus on serving the needs of diverse urban populations. This is a critical and exciting time for the new Dean to lead the School of Social Work. The School's more than 48 full-time faculty teach nearly 1,100 students pursuing both the M.S.W. and, in conjunction with The Graduate Center, CUNY, a Ph.D. in social welfare.
The Dean is responsible for the school's general academic and administrative management, including but not limited to faculty, resource and program development, and accreditation reviews. S/he will be expected to build an environment of support and innovation while further advancing the stature of the School's academic programs. Reporting to the Provost and President of the College, the Dean will foster high-quality teaching and academic programs as well as research and service-related activities. In addition, s/he will support the mission of professional preparation, develop and strengthen external partnerships and alliances, and enhance community among faculty, students, alumni and other constituencies. The incumbent will be expected to provide intellectual leadership, facilitate a culture of innovation and collaboration, raise funds, serve as a strong internal advocate for the school, represent the school to a variety of internal and external constituencies, and continue to enhance the school's profile, visibility, and effectiveness..
The ideal candidate will have an earned doctorate and/or Master's Degree in Social Work and at least five years of related experience. The Dean will be an energetic, experienced social work professional with vision, creativity, and a willingness to take risks. S/he must be a proven administrator with a track record of working collaboratively with a diverse group of faculty and fellow deans, as well as social agencies and the social work community. The new dean will also have the organizational skills and ability necessary to navigate effectively in a complex academic setting.
