Duties: This position has a co-reporting relationship to the Office of the General Counsel and the Director of the Gene Therapy Program (GTP.) The position resides at the Gene Therapy Program and daily activities are directed by the Director of GTP. The Gene Therapy Program is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.

The laboratory of Dr. James Wilson, M/d., Ph.D. has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the 'go-to' organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing

Joining GTP offers scientific professionals the unique opportunity of seeing their research go from bench to bedside and discoveries that could one day lead to cures.

This position provides professional legal advice and expertise in connection with the activities of the Office of General Counsel (OGC), the Office of Research Services (ORS), and other appropriate University offices, including the review, revision, negotiation and conclusion of complex clinical trial and sponsored research agreements from the corporate sector and materials transfer and other research related agreements to ensure compliance with law and the University policy. Additional responsibilities include the review of conflict of interest policies and procedures, review of conflict of interest submissions by the Gene Therapy staff/faculty, the development of systems to identify potential conflicts, coordinate with and provide advice to the University more broadly with respect to conflict of interest issues. Signatory authority for research-related agreements; Associate Director title and functional reporting relationship into the Office of Research Services with respect to responsibilities managed by the research administration function (marked with an asterisk).

Qualifications: J.D. from ABA accredited law school; demonstrated experience, including independent handling of cases, client contact, and legal research. Experience in health law, regulatory and/or enforcement background is highly preferred. Must be admitted and in good standing in Pennsylvania or other state bar; admission to Pennsylvania Bar is required within one year of appointment. This position requires demonstrated capability for legal research, analysis and reasoning, impeccable oral and written communication skills, negotiation skills and an ability to identify and address complicated and sensitive problems with creativity and with professional discretion and judgment and an ability to interact and function effectively in an academic and research environment.
