The University of Connecticut, Department of Mechanical Engineering invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position open at Assistant and Associate Professor levels in the general area of thermal-fluid sciences. We seek outstanding candidates to introduce novel directions and complement the strengths of the department in areas including but not limited to first principles approaches to computational heat transfer, experimental heat and mass transfer, energy systems and materials, modeling and diagnostics of combustion processes, micro- and nano-fluidics including biological applications such as organs-on-chips and drug delivery, soft matter mechanics and complex fluids. The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized, externally funded research program and contribute to the education of our students.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Connecticut provides a vibrant, stimulating and supportive environment for exchanging ideas that advance the frontiers of knowledge. Our faculty have international stature in their fields recognized by prestigious awards, are engaged in ground breaking interdisciplinary research, and actively pursue a dynamic educational atmosphere for our students. Our department is home to UTC Pratt & Whitney Center of Excellence, in which the faculty are engaged in collaborative research and development efforts with United Technologies. Department of Mechanical Engineering has annual research expenditures around $5-7M.

The School of Engineering and the University of Connecticut continue a momentum of unprecedented growth as evidenced by significantly increased research expenditures, and a 20-year state funded $2.3B initiative to enhance the physical infrastructure as well as research and teaching activities. In response to transformative new partnerships with industry and a state-bonded $1.8B investment in STEM infrastructure and education at the University of Connecticut, the University expects to hire over 500 new faculty by 2023. Key developments driving this growth also include the establishment in 2013 of a General Electric Partnership for Advanced Materials, Pratt & Whitney Additive Manufacturing Innovation Center and an UTC Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment; strong background and research interests in at least one of the areas identified above; a record of or demonstrated potential in scholarship and establishing a successful, externally funded research program; a proven record of or commitment to excellence in teaching; and dedication to promoting diversity through teaching, service and research.

Preferred Qualifications

Outstanding record of research and scholarship excellence; experience in developing research grant applications to funding agencies; experience in conducting research in a competitive interdisciplinary research environment; record of or interest in engaging with industry in research; record of service to society; and experience in and/or commitment to integrating technology into instruction, and combining research into education.

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2017. The successful candidate's primary academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
