Occupational Summary:
We are looking for a highly motivated person to work in the laboratory of Dr. Kevin Franks in the Department of Neurobiology at Duke University. The Franks laboratory (www.thefrankslab.org) studies the formation and plasticity of sensory representations, focusing on the mouse olfactory system. We use electrophysiological recordings, behavioral analyses and optogenetic tools to study sensory neuroscience to probe this question. This position is ideal for recent graduates wishing to gain practical training in a state-of-the art research environment investigating neural circuits of the brain. The candidate must be flexible and willing to function in a fast-paced and changing work environment.

Work Performed:
Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in research laboratory tests, experiments and determinations to obtain data for research purposes; compile, analyze, document and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Confer with principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments. Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.
  • Lab administrative work, including: purchasing, ordering animals, and maintaining logs
  • Help manage mouse colony
  • Experiments, including: mouse surgeries, optogenetic experiments, and in vivo recordings
  • Other related duties incidental to the work described herein

Required Qualifications:
Education: Work requires a bachelor's degree in a botany, biology, zoology, or other science related field.

Experience: None required above education/training requirement OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE.

An undergraduate degree in biology, neurosciences, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific discipline is highly preferred.
