I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Instructional Design, the Instructional Designer will assist and support University faculty in the conceptualization, design, and development of online and hybrid courses, utilizing the latest instructional technology, design theories, and teaching strategies. The incumbent is responsible for the following duties.

  • Works with University faculty to assess and analyze course needs, teaching style, Program or School policies, students and other factors that may shape the design of online courses.
  • Collaborates regularly with University faculty to plan for and design online courses, including, but not limited to, finalizing course goals and learning objectives, course alignment and outline, and plans for the use of media in the course.
  • Develops and facilitates the development of all course content, including course media, assessments, grading tools, learning activities, readings, and other course materials.
  • Consults with eDesign Shop media team to develop high-end media and assists with script writing, video shoots, and media production where needed.
  • Participates in course review process, ensuring that all courses meet quality standards and that these standards are incorporated into the design of each course.
  • Maintains a high degree of knowledge in existing and emerging innovations in instructional technologies and is able to assess and envision how these tools can be applied to course development efforts.
  • Abides by University's guidance on accessibility and designs courses to comply with accessibility standards.
  • Collaborates with eDesign Shop team and other online course design professionals around the University on instructional design and faculty development-related projects, including but not limited to facilitating training for faculty, developing online course design resources, and participating regularly in a University-wide instructional design group.

The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree preferred but not required
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Experience with university faculty
  • Knowledge of teaching and of adult learning theories and concepts
  • Demonstrated experience using instructional technology and a Learning Management System for the development of learning content
  • Experience with multimedia production within an educational context
