Join our team of creatives! Creative Services at Public Affairs is a collaborative creative team responsible for campus-wide communications. We are looking for an energetic, self-motivated graphic designer to develop innovative and strategic marketing, communications and branding solutions. The strategic design specialist will be an integral member of our team and will use his/her visual design skills to communicate the Illinois story.

As a part of our team, you will be responsible for:
  • Designing and executing a variety of communications materials, including collateral, data visualization and graphic identity work applicable to both print and digital
  • Taking projects from concept development to final execution, presenting ideas and status to stakeholders throughout the process
  • Designing and implementing creative marketing strategies for a broad range of university audiences including prospective and enrolled students and their families; prospective faculty and donors; corporate and foundation executives; news media; alumni; and state legislators and officials
  • Demonstrating fresh design solutions for print and digital media
  • Advancing the Illinois brand by serving as an expert on campus identity standards and incorporating the Illinois brand into all campus communications
  • Provide visual design, branding and product expertise to campus communicators and advise on proper usage of campus identity systems

In addition, the Strategic Design Specialist:
  • Collaborates with and/or source additional resources such as video producers, photographers, copywriters and printers
  • Works with in-house project managers to affirm communications objectives are met, determine effective solutions, and ensure brand consistency and high standard of creative execution on time and on budget
  • Is detail oriented, resourceful, and a creative problem-solver; can work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a larger team
  • Helps others in creative thinking and brainstorming processes
  • Creates multimedia including photo galleries, slideshows and digital content using WebTools
  • Studies industry trends and their potential effect on campus communications
  • Suggests ways to enhance Creative Services offerings accordingly
  • Researches trends in graphic design, creative methods, typography, web design and social media outlining options for management and senior staff
  • Works to promote Creative Services as the go-to design choice for the Urbana campus through regular contact with campus communications professionals
  • Keeps up-to-date with the most efficient technologies and work flow techniques
  • Works with team members to ensure product is of high quality and service meets client expectations
  • Performs other duties, as assigned

Required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in design, communications, or related field
  • Two years of graphic design experience
  • Advanced skills in current design software including CS6 (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and MS Office
  • Excellent visual design and communication skills
  • Adept layout composition and mechanical skills to produce files for print and web
  • Strong understanding of printing processes, color-matching systems, photography, lighting and typography
  • Self-motivated to prioritize meet critical project milestones and deadlines and be able to manage and deliver multiple projects at once
  • Experience in client relations, budgets, deadlines, and tracking of hours
  • An extensive and thorough knowledge of designing and executing communication pieces in print
  • Knowledge of visual design practices, marketing strategy, social media, and other innovative technologies
  • Ability to clearly and consistently organize, manage and present complex information

Bonus experience:
  • Three to five years of graphic design experience
  • Experience with illustration, animation and new media
  • Outstanding conceptual design skills with experience creating storyboards, workflows, wireframes and mockups
  • An understanding of web interface and user experience design
  • Experience with HTML and CSS
  • Familiarity with University of Illinois WebTools, higher education marketing and/or the Urbana campus

Creative Services is the design unit of the central communications office at the University of Illinois. We provide graphic design expertise and support to advance the University of Illinois brand and the specific communications goals of Creative Services/Public Affairs and all campus units. As a team, we concept and develop beautiful and useable communications solutions for the entire campus while strengthening the Illinois brand.
