Salary Range:
$66,242 to $85,268 Entry Level Annual Salary (Academic Salary Schedule 2015-2016); Maximum Salary Potential $111,916. Note: Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.

Position Summary:
This is a grant funded, non-tenured, categorical full-time 100% FTE faculty position as English Instructor (Metas Program) in the Division of Language Arts located at San Jose City College.

Position Purpose:


Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Coordinate undergraduate research program to support and promote undergraduate opportunities to engage in mentored research experiences and facilitate the development of relationships between SJCC and UCSC based on common interests in undergraduate research.
  2. Participate in activities that enhance student recruitment, and retention especially among Latino students with an emphasis on transfer readiness for a UC campus.
  3. Collaborate with various support programs and develop recruitment strategies to engage Latino students, first-generation, low-income, and other underrepresented students in undergraduate research and creative activities. Cooperatively coordinate and facilitate academic activities for Cultivamos Excelencia Undergraduate Summer Research Institute and Research Symposium on collaboration with UCSC. Develop, maintain, and assess programming that supports quality faculty participation and mentoring in undergraduate research and creative activities. Work with faculty, staff, and students across academic divisions to promote, facilitate, monitor, evaluate, and document undergraduate research and creative activities experiences. Assist in the development of newsletters, media, publicity events, and web content. Provide guidance and training for faculty, UCSC graduate students, and peer tutors to support undergraduate research experiences. Facilitate meetings with faculty and administrators across divisions and departments at SJCC that suitably match with UCSC to foster undergraduate research and creative activities and promote collaboration and cooperation. Monitor and write reports on program participation and results per grant requirements. Teach in Learning Community linked class model and regularly meet and confer with learning community colleague on planning classroom activities and instructional strategies. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as: participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as: course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline/department or district. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy. Foster a professional work and learning environment. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Position Summary: This is a grant funded, non-tenured, categorical full-time 100% FTE faculty position as English Instructor (Metas Program) in the Division of Language Arts located at San Jose City College.

This position is housed in the Metas Program and reports to the Dean of Language Arts with liaison responsibilities to the Title V: HSI “Cultivamos Excelenica Project” which is a transfer initiative in collaboration with the University of California at Santa Cruz. The principal goal of the Cultivamos Excelencia Project is to motivate and retain Hispanic and other high-need students to complete a degree at a research university. By working together, San Jose City College and University of California-Santa Cruz (UCSC) will use a combination of tutoring, mentoring, research skills instruction, transfer advising and, perhaps most important, participation in undergraduate research experiences to encourage self-efficacy, skill development and motivation to complete their bachelor degrees on-time and with a highly honed set of analytical and writing skills.

This is a grant-funded non-tenured categorical position within a federally-funded program under the Title V: Hispanic-Serving Institutions grant. The grant period is from 10/01/2015 to 9/30/2020. Continuation is contingent upon annual funding.

Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Master’s in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition

OR

Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism

OR

*The Equivalent

2. Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, gender identity, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.

3. Success integrating diversity as appropriate into the major duties outlined in the job description and in the duties listed in the District's hiring policy; or demonstrated equivalent transferable skills to do so.

Desired Qualifications:
1. Experience advising Latinx students and/or student clubs.
2. Experience working with Latinx student retention programs.
3. Experience planning or facilitating undergraduate research symposiums.
4. Experience developing best-practices and models of undergraduate research to encourage research opportunities for community college students.
5. Strong background in research methodology to support students with the development of undergraduate research project across academic disciplines.
6. Experience coordinating undergraduate research program to support and promote undergraduate opportunities to engage in mentored research experiences and facilitate the development of relationships between SJCC and UCSC based on common interests in undergraduate research.
7. Bilingual abilities, desirable.
