Summary of Duties
Advises new, prospective, and transfer students in all aspects of academic programs, including developmental and career advising as well as helping students develop an educational plan towards graduation. Manages an advising caseload to improve retention. Duties include explaining policies, making referrals, maintaining records, interpreting test scores, dealing with academic standards issues, coordinating academic issues with faculty and staff, and represents the department on various projects, committees, and meetings as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master’s degree in Counseling & Guidance, Educational Psychology, Social Work, or related Social Science field and two years of full time professional employment related to the Summary of Duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of student advising and teaching laws and techniques including content, curriculum, and graduation requirements.

Knowledge of psychosocial interviewing and counseling techniques including the administration and interpretation of the MBTI, STRONG and other psychological tests.

Knowledge of student development, and the ability to assist students in developing effective academic and/or career plans that align with life goals, in order to promote student retention and academic success.

Understanding of and commitment to UVU’s mission and strategic directions.

Skills in the use of microcomputers, computer terminals, and academic and office software platforms (BANNER) as applied to management of student records, report preparation, and related activities.

Public speaking and group presentation skills.

Effective interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to gather data regarding current social, economic and employment conditions and trends, compile information, and prepare reports.

Ability to creatively and independently problem-solve by prioritizing, organizing, and multitasking while under pressure.

Ability to serve individuals with diverse personalities.

Ability to work in a team environment and represent the department.
