Job Description:

The Database Administrator I is a twelve-month, full-time position that reports to the Director of Enterprise Systems in Western Kentucky University's Information Technology (IT) Division. The position works under the supervision of more senior database administrators in a team that manages databases for central IT systems that support the operation and mission of the entire University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Primary support and administration of Blackboard databases; assistance with software installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Blackboard products; light system administration of Blackboard servers.
  • Primary support and administration of telephone billing databases; assistance with software installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of related products; programming and assistance related to billing reporting.
  • Primary support and administration of Astra systems for Academic Affairs; assistance with support, maintenance, and troubleshooting of cloud-hosted products.
  • Primary support and administration of MySQL databases for various web systems; assist Web Development group with software development and maintenance as required.
  • Secondary support and administration of Banner databases; assistance with general support and troubleshooting of Banner databases and servers including Single Sign-On.
  • Secondary support of all minor databases including the data warehouse, InfoView, Advance, and other systems; assistance with light systems administration of several Linux/Unix servers; and light programming in various scripting languages.
  • Other duties as required.

Knowledge and Skills Considered Essential for Success

  • An understanding of web, application, and database server architectures, with experience in their installation, maintenance, monitoring, and configuration.
  • Proficiency in a form of shell scripting and SQL programming.
  • A thorough understanding database security and industry best practices including account provisioning, role-based privileges, and the TCP/IP protocol and ports necessary for database client/server connectivity.
  • Ability to work occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends in support of major system upgrades or system recovery efforts.
  • Demonstrable diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to simultaneously manage and organize several projects and regular duties.
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to write technical reports and documentation.
  • Must be an independent "self-starter" who functions well as part of a team.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant job experience.
  • Experience or course work administering Oracle or other multi-user, relational databases.
  • Experience or course work in SQL programming.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix server operating systems.


Additional Information:

Salary Grade: 108 Salary Range: $34,873 - $46,719
