Columbus State University has two openings for an Academic Advisor | Student Retention Specialist in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE). This position will report directly to the Director and will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of a holistic advisement and student retention program; demonstrate and practice student centeredness; and foster close professional relationships with students. This position will work collaboratively with other departments and programs to ensure accurate, appropriate, and timely services for freshmen and sophomore students and additional retention, progression, and graduation services to student populations throughout the University.

The successful candidate will develop an advising and mentoring relationship with current and incoming university students;  provide holistic advising services; assist students with problem-solving; assist with student registration and course schedule planning; develop and maintain student records; and provide intensive and proactive services to students to improve retention and graduation rates through advisement to military students, adult learners, Early College students, dual enrolled students, students on probation and returning from exclusion, students not meeting satisfactory academic progress through financial aid (SAP), homeless and foster care students, first generation and transfer students, and students participating in BOOST and receiving child care scholarships. The selected candidate will also partner with and provide referrals to campus resources, including but not limited to, Enrollment Services – Admissions, Financial Aid, and Registrar; the Center for Career Development, The Counseling Center, the Office of Disability Services, and the Academic Center for Tutoring; utilize data and technology to determine which students need additional and ongoing contact and follow-up throughout semester; employ technology such as Banner, Degree Works, EAB, and the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness to identify students who need services and use social media, telephone, email, and text messaging to contact them; collaborate with faculty and administration to enhance advisement for students; demonstrate and nurture cultural competence when working with students, faculty, and staff in a diverse university environment; and all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and related experience in an appropriate academic discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The selected candidate must possess excellent communication skills; a demonstrated ability to take initiative toward project completion; and the ability to work collaboratively with team members.

Preferred qualifications include: A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university; previous advising experience; experience in social media application; tracking of special populations; documenting contacts; making referrals; and maintaining advisee files.
