WEB DEVELOPER(ANALYST PROGRAMMER II)LEVEL 12 BACKGROUND:The Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) is the interdisciplinary social science research institute of Duke University. SSRI brings together researchers with interests in problems that cross the various social and behavioral sciences, including problems that connect with the humanities and natural sciences. We promote multidisciplinary collaboration among such scholars as they work on important social issues that are challenging to address fully from within any given discipline.

MUST HAVE DRUPAL EXPERIENCE

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY: In consultation with the Communications team and the Data Information Services team, design, build and maintain SSRI and affiliate/project websites. We're looking for candidates who understand that development is about PHP and Drupal skills, but also creativity and attention to detail. This position reports to the Associate Director of Communications.The role is responsible for designing, coding and modifying websites,from layout to function and according to a client's specifications. Strive to create visually appealing sites that feature user-friendly design and clear navigation and adhere to Duke's branding guidelines.
  • 4+ years PHP development experience
  • Strong database design and query skills
  • Knowledge of Drupal 7
  • Knowledge of implementing accessible websites (Section 508)
  • Experience with HTML5, CSS,JavaScript/JQuery, REST APIs, MySQL/MariaDB, and GIT
  • Comfortable working in a Linux and Apache development environment
  • Maintain institute website as well as sites created for affiliates and faculty projects.
  • Strong understanding of site functionality, site architecture, data flow and intuitive navigation schemes are expected.
  • Experience with Web Applications and programming languages such as HTML5,CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL; Strong understanding of UI, cross-browser compatibility, general web functions and standards
  • Develop reusable Drupal templates with custom PHP as needed.
  • Deliver highly customized Drupal-based solutions that support the mission of SSRI by specifying, planning, designing, developing and implementing data intensive websites.
  • Build and manage sites using HTML5, XHTML, Javascript/jQuery and detailed CSS layout techniques
  • Maintain expertise on state of the art and emerging web technologies,such as HTML5, CSS3, integration of Javascript/JQuery, integration of XML/XSLT,and development of mobile sites or applications.
  • Provide strategic leadership on new technologies and online trends.
  • Ensure Institute is meeting and exceeding the needs of its online community by assisting in the development of effective content strategies and site architecture.
  • Provide accurate scoping, time estimates and participate in overall project planning.
  • Actively participate in the Drupal community and stay abreast of design and feature changes within Drupal.
  • Collaborate with researchers to identify their project needs and provide appropriate technology solutions.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

EDUCATION/TRAINING
  • BA or BS preferably in information science, computer science, or a computer-related field or equivalent coursework or technical training.

EXPERIENCE
  • 2-5 years experience in web development
  • 4 years applications programming experience with some responsibility for systems design and supervision or project coordination. (OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE)
  • Expertise with content management systems, specifically Drupal 7
  • Familiarity with responsive Web design
  • Comprehensive understanding of web development technologies including PHP, XHTML, CSS, XML, XSLT, JavaScript and AJA
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g. MySQL), schema design and theory
  • Experience with online survey tools and/or survey design
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills
  • The ability to interact with both technical and non-technical audiences
